Ways to Tell If You Are in Labor Posted: 01 Aug 2009 07:37 PM PDT Am I in labor? That is a question that every pregnant woman will be thinking at the end of her pregnancy. Your body will start preparing itself for the big day weeks before hand and many women get symptoms of labor during this time, and many don't. It can be quite common to feel the odd period type pain in your lower abdomen or Braxton hicks contractions that feel a little painful. Many women will find that these pains will only be a one off or will last for an hour and then wear off. It can be difficult to determine when you are in the early stage of labor and some women do not realize they are until the have progressed quite far into labor. This may be a good thing for some, but not for the ones who want to be organized and have a distance to reach the hospital. Perfect if you are having a home birth though! Some things to look out for to answer the question: Am I in labor? 1. Painful tightenings in your abdomen that are coming at least 5-10 mins apart. 2. Your waters break- This does not necessarily mean you are in labor but you will need to be seen by your midwife if your contractions don't start within a couple of hours. 3. A sense that something isn't quite right or you just 'know' that you are in labor. 4. Intermittent pain in your lower back that just won't go away. That is a few symptoms of labor that I have mentioned. Please always ask your health practitioner if you have any problems
10 Things You Might Not Know About Your Chance of Getting Pregnant Posted: 01 Aug 2009 07:12 PM PDT Couples trying to conceive don't always understand why it doesn't happen on the first try. There are many reasons why a couple may not conceive in a typical month that are not related to infertility. If you are trying to conceive and are having a difficult time, take a breath and know that you are not the only one. Here are some reasons why a couple might not be able to conceive right away: 1. In a young, healthy, fertile couple there is only a 20% chance of getting pregnant each month. 2. It takes 5 to 6 months for the average fertile couple to achieve pregnancy. 3. 40% of infertility cases are caused by female factors, 40% of infertility cases are caused by male factors, and 20% of infertility cases are caused by both male and female factors. 4. One out of every 6 couples has difficulty conceiving. 5. Sperm can live inside a woman's body for about 5 days. A released egg only lives inside a woman's body for about 24 hours. Timing is very important! 6. Ovulation usually occurs around day 14 of a woman's cycle, but it is dependent on the length of the cycle. 7. A woman may ovulate while having her menstrual cycle. Again, knowing the length of her cycle will help a woman know about when she will ovulate. OPKs (Ovulation Prediction Kits) are helpful with this. 8. Even if a woman always has a 28 day cycle, she might not be ovulating. This is called an anovulatory cycle. 9. Miscarriages sometimes happen very early in a woman's cycle. If this happens around the time her period should start, she might not realize she was pregnant and think it is just her period. 10. Prenatal vitamins cannot help a woman get pregnant, but are essential for the development of a baby. To maximize your chance when trying to conceive, there are many things you can do. Charting your cycles is one way to start. There are many things involved in charting your cycles. It's really up to you how in-depth you want to go with this. Keeping track of your cervical mucus and the position of your cervix will help you see signs of when your most fertile days are. Some women also track their basal body temperature. This won't tell you when you are about to ovulate, but you can track the trends in your cycle. Losing weight, if you are overweight, is another step you can take to maximize your chance of getting pregnant. A healthy diet and exercise will help prepare your body for carrying a baby for 9 months. Smoking, drinking, and doing drugs are not recommended when trying to conceive. These can all affect your chances. If you think there is something else wrong with your body or your husband's body, the best bet is to just go see a doctor. A doctor may perform many tests that will rule out any major problems, one of which is the Clomid Challenge Test. Another test might be done to check if your fallopian tubes are blocked. A semen analysis can be used to check sperm count and the characteristics of the sperm. Don't get upset about having to go through a lot of tests. Most likely, they will rule out anything that could be wrong. If you are one of many couples having trouble getting pregnant, don't worry! There are many things that can be done, at home and in a doctor's office, that can help you to achieve your dream.
Am I Pregnant? - 3 Earliest Possible Signs of Pregnancy That Detect Pregnancy Before Missed Periods Posted: 01 Aug 2009 02:05 PM PDT Are there any possible signs of pregnancy that can tell woman the answer to "Am I Pregnant" even before missed periods? YES there are! Some women are able to tell the answer of this question the moment the conception takes place, as these women have fair knowledge of earliest possible signs of pregnancy. Following are three earliest possible signs of pregnancy. These signs enable any woman to identify her pregnancy even before her missed period. Basal Body Temperature: Most women know that basal body temperature increases during ovulation. But only few know that if the temperature stays elevated after the ovulation is completed then this is one of the earliest possible symptoms of pregnancy. For monitoring basal body temperature one just requires a cheap basal thermometer to detect changes in temperature daily at the same time, preferably in the morning. Enlarged and Tender Breasts: The hormonal levels start to rise very early in pregnancy. These hormonal levels show different signs and symptoms. Initially the body is not prepared for these hormonal changes. The most obvious change takes place in feeling and shape of breasts. There is a feeling of fullness in breasts few days after conception. This fullness feeling fades away fairly quickly when the body gets accustomed to new hormonal levels. Fatigue: Lack of energy is another earliest possible sign of pregnancy. Sometimes it becomes difficult to differentiate between pregnancy fatigue and general exhaustion. Health professionals are of the view that fatigue is also related to new hormonal level. It disappears when the body adjusts itself to the increased hormonal level.
Altruistic Surrogacy Vs Commercial Surrogacy Posted: 01 Aug 2009 10:51 AM PDT Surrogacy requires one to be high on moral and ethical standards basically because of the large amounts of money involved in the whole process. It should also be noted that intended parents who are without children are asking a lot by requesting a total stranger to get pregnant and carry there child through the nine month period and surrender the child to them when the time is due after a successful birth. Further more, due to the infertility of the intended couple; the surrogate mother will take the place of the intended mother by carrying the infant through the nine month period. There is the traditional aspect of surrogacy where by the sperms of the father will be artificially inseminated to the surrogate mother which will technically make the surrogate mother the biological parent by law. On that note; it is considered as a fact that will cause problems with some people moral ethics and standards. In cases whereby you will find that the couple in fertile a sperm donor has to be used to make the intended surrogate mother pregnant. In the gestational method, the surrogates' mothers' egg will be artificially fertilized with the intended fathers' sperm in a lab and later placed in the surrogate mothers' womb to be nature until the pregnancy term is completed to the final month. The third method is mainly used when the mother can not sustain the infant in her womb for the nine months pregnancy term. The above can also be due to medical reasons that may hinder the mother carry the baby to term. During this period the surrogate mother will be receiving some money for expenditure or reimbursements for her for any cost incurred from her own pocket during the nine month period caring the infant. This money can also be referred to as the base fee. Due to a high possibility of a miscarriage in the first three months which are very sensitive, the base fee is usually paid in installment so as to avoid excess or over paying the surrogate mother in case the baby does not make it through the in tended labor period. The surrogate mother is handsomely paid for the period she carried the infant for the nine months till the babies' successful delivery. Do note that the amounts paid in installments gradually increase as the pregnancy advances in it later stages thus the base money will result to a larger amounts of money through the nine month period. This may leave many people wondering why it costs a lot in the United States of America but the attorneys and the legal systems in general may ask for a lot more than any judge will agree but if it did happen it would due to the agreement made in the draft contract between the surrogates and the intended parents. You will find in different countries the cost is much less but basically its all comes to the interest of money.
