Overcome Infertility - How Conventional Medication Helps to Treat Congenital Uterine Abnormalities

Posted: 01 Aug 2009 09:20 AM PDT

As we mentioned in previous article, conventional medicine plays an important role in treating all kinds of disease and most of the time is the first treatment for a couple who for what ever reason cam not conceive after 1 year of unprotected sexual intercourse or can not carry the pregnancy to full term. With the advance of medical technology, Some infertility are caused by structure problem and can be corrected through surgery. In this article, we will discuss how conventional medicine helps to treat congenital uterine abnormalities.

I. Definition
Congenital uterine abnormalities is a result of abnormal uterus and tube which are developed in the embryo stage.

II. Types of treatments
1. Septate uterus
a) In the septate uterus, there is a wall, septum membrane dividing the top of the uterus. Since the uterus is divided, it has little room for the fetus to develop and grow, leading to miscarriage or premature birth. The odd of miscarriage is about 25%.
b) Diagnosis
Most cases of sepatate uterus can be detected by hysteroscopy. In this procedure, a hysperoscopy which is thin instrument called a hysteroscope is passed through your vagina and cervix and into your uterus, so your doctor can have a clean view of your uterus.
c) Surgery
Metroplasty is type of surgery normally used to correct a septate uterus. Through laparoscopic surgery, the septum that divides the uterus is removed, thereby reshaping the uterus to it's normal appearance, and allowing extra room for the fetus to growing.

2. Unicornuate uterus
a) Unicornuate uterus is a condition of which the uterus is one side and smaller than usual. It possible for women with unicornuate uterus to get pregnant and giving birth to a healthy baby. Most cases of unicornuate uterus are never diagnosed and only 1 in 500 women are born with this kind of abnormality.
b) Diagnosis
If unicornuate uterus is suspected, your doctor may order hysterosalpingogram (HSG) or ultresound, the images produced will help to your doctor determine the severity of your abnormal uterine structure.
c) Surgery
Laparoscopy is the most common surgery used to remove of the rudimentary uterine horn

3. Bicornuate uterus
a) Bicornuate uterus is a condition of which a woman is born with 2 separate uterine cavity, each of them is connected to fallopian separately.
Since women with bicornuate uterus still can get pregnant and give birth to a premature baby, many of them can bypass the lapraoscopis surgery. If the problem is serious then your doctor may suggest metroplasty which is one form of surgery helped to join the two uterine halves.
b) Diagnosis
It is the same as in 2 a)
c) Depending to the severity of the problem, if necessary, your doctor may recommend reconstructive laparoscopic surgery as we mention above. Other wise, it will be left alone but you may have to work closely with during each stage of pregnancy.

4. Didelphic uterus
a) An abnormal formation of the uterus during the embryo stage resulting in 2 cervix with 2 smaller uterus and sometime 2 vagina on top of the vagina canal. A woman with didelphic uterus may not need surgery because she can still get pregnant and give birth to a premature baby, it is advised that she should work closely with her doctor during pregnancy to watch for signs of pre-term labour or other risks to the baby.
b) Diagnosis
Same as 2 a), but sometimes MRI may be ordered by your doctor, if necessary.
c) Surgery
In most cases, a woman with didephic uterus do not required surgery, but it is suggested that she must work closely with her doctor for any sign or risk of pre-term labor.

III. Surgical risk is involved, if surgery is required.

What Are the Most Common C-Section Complications?

Posted: 01 Aug 2009 09:08 AM PDT

If you have given birth by a cesarean section, the probability is that you will end up suffering from any number of c-section complications, but there are always ways of avoiding the most common of these.

Be very careful after the birth, monitor your wound constantly. There are some warning signs you should be aware of that may possibly indicate a setback. If you experience any of the following c-section complications, be sure to speak to your doctor or midwife right away:-

If you have a fever

It is occasionally normal to have a somewhat higher temperature than usual, but if you are monitoring it yourself, generally doctors would want you to seek medical advice if it was higher than 101f. If you have a less intense fever for longer than 24 hours you should also get in touch with your doctor.

If your incision is draining

It should be looked at, whilst it may be usual to lose a slight discharge it is probably best to allow the professionals decide if you have a problem other that make that judgment yourself.

If you have any discomfort that doesn't cease or disappear after a few days you should again seek medical help. If you suffer pain that increases despite pain killing medication then call or seek professional medical advice immediately.

If you have any difficulty breathing. You are at a greater risk of any breathing problems following a Caesarean. It is normal to feel sore at first and this may mean that you struggle to take any deep breaths. If this continues to be a problem or gets any worse then you should contact your doctor.

If your sanitary pad is soaked every hour or two, if you have no bleeding or if your bleeding in no way begins to slow down then you need to be seen. Sometimes this can be due to a piece of the placenta being left inside your uterus.

If you are ever in any doubt regarding any c-section complications you might be experiencing, it is important that you immediately phone your healthcare professional or doctor.

Build Your Nest - Preparing Your Home For a Baby

Posted: 01 Aug 2009 08:26 AM PDT

When you are getting ready to bring home your precious new baby, you want to make sure that your house is fully prepared for the new member of your family. You might have painted and decorated the newborn's room in a gender-neutral nautical theme or created a gender-specific car and truck nursery for a baby boy. Either way, you want to make sure everything is perfect. Here are some ideas to follow to ensure that you are doing everything right.

If you want to paint your baby's room, it would be a good idea to use low-VOC paint or VOC-free paint. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds. Typical household paint contains a huge amount of chemicals, 150 of which are suspected carcinogens. After brushed onto your walls, the VOC chemicals in the paint react with oxygen in the air. These carbon-containing compounds can form ozone and other pollutants. Ozone has been linked to respiratory problems and other health issues. Don't fear, though: low-VOC and VOC-free paints are available. Paints that meet governmental standards for low VOC emissions have a seal on their container so that you can easily find this safer paint.

Some old wives' tales say that breathing stirred-up, cooler air can give you a sore throat or cold. However, putting a fan in your baby's room can reduce its chance of dying from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, by an estimated 72%. Doctors suspect that a baby becoming overheated is a risk factor for SIDS, and fan can help prevent that. Also, medical experts suspect that babies that die of SIDS get a buildup of carbon dioxide in their airways, and fans help circulate the air, providing your child with a fresh, oxygenated supply of air.

Another way to decrease your child's risk for SIDS is to keep the crib spartan. As a new parent, you might be tempted to fill your baby's bed with soft, downy blankets and fluffy, friendly stuffed animals. However, doctors think that this also contributes to reducing your baby's fresh air supply. Provide your newborn with a firm bed and keep it as clutter-free as possible to help keep your baby safe. This includes taking out extra cloth and the pillows.

To keep yourself as relaxed as possible, it can be helpful to have a fully-loaded changing station in the baby's room. This way, you're not always having to take your baby from its bassinet or crib to the changing table down the hall. This can be especially convenient if you have a baby that's prone to waking up in the middle of the night with soiled diapers. Additionally, as you will be spending a large amount of time feeding your baby, make sure you have a comfy place to sit nearby.

Of course, all babies have the same basic necessities. However, sometimes birth injuries can make your baby even more needy than a normal, healthy child. If your baby has suffered a birth injury as a result of medical malpractice, contact Philadelphia birth injury lawyers today.

Maternity Acupressure - A Few Warnings About Using Acupressure to Induce Labor

Posted: 31 Jul 2009 02:48 PM PDT

I have written a few articles promoting the benefits of using acupressure to naturally induce labor. But it would be very irresponsible of me to not also write an article to warn of some dangers with acupressure and pregnancy. Very often I see and hear people giving others advice on this issue that is incorrect and can actually be dangerous. Here is a list of myths I have heard over the years that you should NOT fall into.

Myth 1: Acupressure will not work until your body is ready to give birth.

The truth: This is partially true. But what isn't explained in this statement is your body starts preparing for labor long before it is safe for you to give birth. Professionals advise staying away from pressure points around your hands, feet and abdomen anytime after your first trimester for this very reason. Well-informed massage therapists and even salon workers are careful not to stimulate these areas accidentally with foot and back massages, as well. This isn't meant to strike fear in your heart with the thought that you can accidentally bump one of these points and spur premature labor because normally it takes more than a bump or poke by accident. It is simply to inform you that you should be careful not to intentionally "activate" these points before you know for certain it is safe for you to give birth.

Myth 2: Acupressure doesn't start working until a day or so later.

The truth: In most cases, signs of early labor begin about 1-4 hours after the treatment. Normally birth takes place within the following 48 hours, but signs for early labor start much more quickly.

Myth 3: You can perform all acupressure treatment yourself.

The truth: If you can still reach your ankles and other areas, then this is technically true. Technically in that you CAN preform acupressure on yourself, but it is advised that you have help. The father, a friend, a family member- anyone can assist. The reason it is a good idea to have someone help is not simply to reach all the points, but also to be around to help when labor does start. This is especially useful if labor begins much more quickly than you are prepared for.

Myth 4: It is safe to perform acupressure at any point late in your third trimester.

The truth: No, no, and no! I was a bit startled when I heard someone saying this, and even more so to find out it has been written all over online. Please do NOT attempt acupressure before you've been told an induction is safe by your physician. The only other time it is safe to start treatment is if you are already beginning labor and want to help things move along more quickly.

Just be sure all is well and safe for you and your baby. Preferably, it should all be cleared by your doctor before doing anything. Most physicians are used to getting questions about naturally inducing labor in all sorts of ways. If your doctor doesn't know about acupressure to induce labor, it is a good idea to seek a second opinion. Acupressure is the third most popular way to induce labor, and almost all doctors should know about it.

How to Induce Labor With Natural and Medical Methods

Posted: 31 Jul 2009 02:13 PM PDT

There are basically two main schools of thought about how to induce labor - with drugs, or with just natural methods. We will discuss only the natural methods here because women have more choices that way, and can better their chances of starting labor.

Inducing labor prematurely is not a wise thing to do. The old saying many women grow to know and hate - 'your baby will be born when ready' - does contain some truth. Some women, even though they feel ready to literally pop at 38 weeks, might require a few more weeks before the baby will be ready to be born.

Remember that some medical procedures might have possibly negative side effects. Consult with your midwife if there is a doubt about it working. These methods might help induce labor but you always want to be safe.

Moving Around - Is your baby not descending fast enough? If so, try some basic physical movements. Doing light physical activity like easy jogging, swimming, or skipping might do the trick. This is because as you move around, so does your baby, and it can get into a better position to descend. Plus the moving around can make your body feel much better all around in general.

Sex - There are a number of ways sex can induce labor. First off, semen can help ripen your cervix since it has a type of chemicals known as prostaglandins. Female orgasms also can produce contractions in women in late term pregnancies. Also, by relaxing physically and emotionally for sex, you might remove a mental barrier to starting contractions. It might sound like a hassle if you're not feeling in the mood to have sex. For mothers wanting to know how to induce labor, this is a fun way.

Relax! - Many women might get nervous or worry too much if they aren't in labor yet. This is a common problem, but it is counterproductive to worry about it. Most women will not start labor if you are feeling stressed out or really upset. If you're worried about learning how to induce labor, don't forget to take a deep breath and start to relax - this will be over soon. Maybe a talking a nice walk or watching a favorite movie? If not, how about doing any of you favorite activities.

Eat Fruit - Some pregnant women swear that eating mango or pineapple induced labor for them. This is because these certain fruits are full of special enzymes, some of which might tone your cervix.

Acupressure - Could you actually induce labor just by applying pressure some places on your body? Surprisingly, over 3/4 of expectant mothers who are ready to start labor can go ahead by using a technique called Acupressure to induce labor. This is something to consider since it often works and can reduce pain during childbirth.

Herbal Solutions - There are many herbs that have been known to induce labor, but if you don't know much about herbs now's not the time to start learning. But for those women that have a naturopath, herbalist, or knowledgeable doctor, ask about evening primrose oil, nettle tea, and blue and black cohash as an option. They are traditional herbs taken to start contractions and lots of women have said they work.

It is safe to say there are common elements in all these ways women learn on how to induce labor. They are all trying to achieve the same thing - to get your body to have contractions and make sure your baby descends down the birth canal safely and efficiently. Chemical methods, be they medical or natural, operate on a very similar mechanism. Other methods make sure to ripen your cervix and to assist in doing anything else needed to push your body into labor.

These are the main methods to understand when learning how to induce labor. Remember that hopefully soon, your pregnancy will be complete and you'll get to hold your newborn child. It may seem like you're going to be pregnant forever but trust me, it's done before you know it. Good luck!
