What Are the Male Fertility Test Procedures?

Posted: 24 Nov 2009 09:47 AM PST

1. Male Fertility Test Kits

If you prefer to do an initial test at home, there are some male fertility test kits you can use to test your sperm count. However, there are limitations to these home test kits. Once you get the result, you may want to consult your doctor for further evaluation.

2. Blood Tests

By taking a blood sample from you, your doctor is able to check your hormones levels and detect any diseases such as HIV, syphilis and hepatitis that can cause infertility.

3. Urine Tests

Your urine will be tested for presence of sperm, bacteria and white blood cells. If you have a large number of sperm present in the urine, you may be having retrograde ejaculation, where the sperm move in the direction of the bladder. Your urine may also be tested for Chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause infertility.

4. Sperm Tests

You will be asked to provide a sample of semen through masturbation usually in a private room at the clinic. You have to abstain from having intercourse for a few days before you collect your sperm sample. The volume and consistency of the semen will be checked. Higher or lower volume indicates low testosterone level or infection. The semen fluid normally liquefies within 20 to 30 minutes after ejaculation. If it takes longer, you may have infection or other problems. The sperm are examined under a microscope to see whether the quantity and the shape are normal and whether the sperm are swimming forward to the egg at normal speed. The sperm are also used to test for presence of antisperm antibodies which adversely affect the functionality of the sperm. Factors like medication, illness, heavy alcohol consumption can affect the sperm quantity and quality. If there is a problem, the sperm tests may be repeated after three months when new sperm are produced.

5. Testicular Biopsy

If no abnormality is found and yet you are not producing sperm, the doctor may perform a testicular biopsy. This is a procedure where the doctor surgically removes a sample of your testicle tissue and extracts the sperm from the tissue for examination.

6. Vasogram

If the doctor suspects blockage along your reproductive duct, he may recommend vasogram. A small incision is made on your scrotum so that a dye can be injected into your vas deferens and x-rays are then taken. This enables the exact location of the blockage to be detected and surgery treatment can be done.

Going for the male fertility test may be tedious but that may help you to detect the cause of your infertility and proper treatment can be performed. You can then look forward to have a healthy baby soon after the treatment.

Overcome Infertility - Period Modification - What is a Normal Menstrual Cycle? In TCM Perspective

Posted: 24 Nov 2009 09:45 AM PST

A normal menstrual cycle is normally from 28-35 days with no symptom, causing discomfort to a woman and excluding dull pain. Menstrual discharge is red and last from 3-5 days without spotting. Not all women with abnormal menstrual cycle are infertile, if you are diagnosed with the unexplained cause of infertility, then your abnormal menstrual cycle may be the cause. Traditional Chinese medicine always helps a woman to restore the normal menstrual cycle, before treating the underlined cause of infertility. Girls in southeast Asia has learnt early from grandmother wisdom that maintaining a normal menstrual cycle is the main objective for easy conception and any menstrual disorder should be look after immediately.

Depending on how the Chinese practitioner divides the menstrual cycle, it may be 4 or 5 phases.

I would like to make it easy for the reader, by dividing it to 4 phases (it is still the same).

I. Phase I - the yin phase (about 12 - 14 days)

At the beginning of the yin phase, yin surges (the rise of estrogen) that leads to the growth of fluids in the uterus that helps to moisten the uterus, and thicken the endometriosis to prepare the uterus for normal conception. The rise of yin also supports the production of blood and production of sperm friendly mucus for sperm invasion.

In conventional medicine, as estrogen rises, the brain signals the hypothalamus to secrete gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (FSH), which in turn stimulates the pituitary gland to produce the follicle stimulating hormone, thus initiating the growth and recruitment of immature follicles in the ovary.

II. Phase II - ovulation phase (about 4 days)

As the yin (estrogen) is at its peak, the liver triggers the start of the ovulation phase by extruding the mature follicles into the fallopian tube. In this phase, the uterus continues to produce sperm friendly mucus as qi and blood moves downward to warm the uterus and promotes the implantation of the egg.

III. Phase III - the yang or luteal phase (about 12 -14 days)

When the egg is extruded into the fallopian tube, the liver transforms yin energy to yang that triggers the yang (progesterone) phase. In this phase, blood and qi also move downward. The endometrial lining becomes softer to prepare for the implantation of the fertilized egg, if pregnancy occurs.

In conventional medicine, in this phase, corpus luteum starts to produce progesterone that triggers the softening of the endometrial lining for fertilized egg implantation.

IV. Phase IV- menstruation phase (about 3-5 days)

If there is no conception occurred, the yang drops. causing the shedding of the uterus lining. The menstrual discharge is bright red and profuse, and only lasts between 3 - 5 days (spotting does not count).

I will continue to provide you with more information which contribute to the causes of abnormal menstrual cycle, including what causes the prolonged and shortened in each phase, and how you can cure them. The aim of this series is to provide the information of which how you can modify your menstrual cycle for easy conception. I believe it is helpful for women whom are diagnosed with the unexplained cause of infertility with symptoms of menstruation disorders.

How to Look Amazing While Pregnant - Learn How Easy it is to Look Great While Pregnant

Posted: 24 Nov 2009 09:39 AM PST

If you want to learn how to look amazing while pregnant then read on to know exactly how. Looking great is linked to your mind and how you think of yourself. How to get your mind to think sexy should be your question.

This is what you do to start to think sexy:

  • Do something you know will make you feel better about yourself. When you see yourself wallowing in your own misery snap out of it by doing something that will always make you feel good.

I'll give you a story, one time me and my friend went out to the mall for a girls night out. I usually think really highly of the way I look, but for some reason I started doubting that the moment I saw all those people in the mall. I felt lost and undesirable, I felt like I could not capture any mans attention not even for a second.

I decided to go to one of those shops I really liked instead of feeling sad. And that is when everything changed. I went inside the dressing room and tried a dress on, and it looked fabulous on me, that shifted my mood and i felt more empowered. The moment I got dressed again and got out of the dressing room I was a changed person, I was more confident and assured and cared less about what anyone thought.

Guess what happened? well my friend kept asking me "what did you do in either?" she said that my face looked nicer and wanted to know what I did. when I told her I just tried on a dress, she didn't believe me, she kept asking and persisting through the whole night. The only thing that shut her up was when I said I applied makeup in the dressing room, which was a lie.

I also got a lot of attention from the men, every time I passed by they couldn't help but turn their heads and stare. My friend noticed the stares and attention the males were given me. and that is why she didnt believe me when I said the truth. This is what happens when I took a few minutes to do something that regained my confidence.

So the lesson is to do something that makes you feel good about yourself and see the difference it will make in your appearance

PCOS and Infertility - What You Can Do About it

Posted: 24 Nov 2009 09:24 AM PST

One of the main reasons for infertility problems in women is called "Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome" (PCOS). It is believe that up to ten percent of women of childbearing age are affected. In fact, most women are not even aware that they have it, which explains why less than 25 percent of women affected by PCOS have been diagnosed. A resistance to insulin is a common side-effect of PCOS, and this has been known to develop diabetes in affected women. It is thought that excess insulin production in some women causes their bodies to produce high levels of androgens (male hormones).

This effect of having more androgens than normal in a woman's body can often lead to the following fertility issues:

A woman's ovaries produce a few egg-containing follicles during her normal cycle. In the latter stages of the cycle, only one remaining follicle will produce the single egg needed for ovulation. Ovulation then takes place after the egg matures and LH levels (Luteinizing Hormone levels) - surge (known as the "LH surge"), causing the follicle to burst and release the egg. But because women with PCOS do not (usually) produce adequate female hormones needed for ovulation, none of the follicles develops into eggs.

Symptoms of PCOS

A few of the follicles will often develop into cysts. These will appear on ultrasounds as a "string of pearls" in the ovary. The lining of the uterus will begin to thicken, as an indirect result of ovulation not occurring.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome shows up as different symptoms in each woman. Some women will not mestruate at all while others will have irregular periods as their only symptoms. During one of these irregular cycles, however, some lucky women conceive nevertheless. But other symptoms can include increased hair growth on chest, face, or back, or thinning hair. Also obesity and high insulin levels, pelvic pain, acne, or type II diabetes. PCOS generally becomes worse with age.

One Treatment - Losing Weight

Ovulation is necessary for a woman to conceive, so inhibiting it is the main reason why PCOS keeps women from becoming pregnant. Thank Goodness, however, there are steps that can be taken to fight this. Because hormone imbalances are often improved by losing excess weight, some women need only to eat healthy and exercise to fix their PCOS. For overweight women with PCOS, Metformin is a drug that is effective for helping a woman's body absorb insulin. It doesn't affect blood sugar directly - but adjusts insulin levels - and so is considered safe as an anti-diabetic drug.

Fertility Drugs

Certain fertiliy drugs have proven effective in helping women with PCOS by blocking estrogen receptors in the brain. The most common is Clomifene (or Clomiphene) and is marketed under the names "Clomid, Clomifert, or Serophene." When these receptors are blocked, the brain is tricked into 'thinking' that estrogen levels or low. This causes the female's body to ovulate by triggering her body to produce more Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinizng Hormone. Clomiphene type of drugs, however, will only help about 35 percent of women who ovulate actually become pregnant.

IVM (In Vitro Maturation)

Some women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome have had success with In Vitro Maturation (IVM). This method involves taking immature eggs from a woman early in her cycle to be matured in the lab. Later they can be used for fertilization. In Vitro Maturation is still a new procedure that is still under development, but is showing promise as a safer and cheaper alternative to In Vitro Fertilization.

IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), however, is when her eggs are harvested only after they have had time to mature. The already-mature egg can now be fertilized with a sperm and placed in a woman's uterus. IVF is often combined with drug therapy to help stimulate the eggs to mature.
