| Posted: 30 Jul 2009 07:56 AM PDT In Vitro Fertilisation or IVF is the process by which fertilisation of the egg cell by the male sperm is achieved outside the womb. This process involves removing the 'ova' or the eggs from the woman's body, letting the sperm fertilise it outside in a controlled environment in a fluid medium and then placing the embryo into the woman's uterus for development. It is used when other Assisted Reproduction techniques like Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer are rendered unsuccessful. A conversational term used for children born because of the IVF method is 'Test Tube Baby' and the first successful such childbirth was achieved in 1978 in England. The process of IVF primarily involves five stages namely, ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilisation, selection and embryo transfer. Ovary stimulation usually begins on the third day of menstruation and is used to control the natural process of ovulation and to also stimulate the growth of multiple follicles of the ovaries. The treatment requires ten days of injections and close monitoring of results. The Estradiol levels which affect the reproductive process are also kept in check. The next stage involves the process of removing the eggs from the ovary just before ovulation. It is generally advisable to remove eggs in the range of 10-30. The process is done just before ovulation and the follicular liquid is removed and handed over to the laboratory to identify the ova. Fertilisation involves the process of copulation of the chosen eggs with the sperms. The two are kept in the culture media for as long as 18 hours. In cases of low sperm count, the sperm is directly injected. The fertilised egg is then subjected to special growth stimulation and is kept in the medium of 48 hours until it arrives at the 6-8 cell level. The process of selection is based on the quality and level of development of the embryo. The embryos are generally transferred after three days of retrieval. The fertilized embryos are graded before embryo transfer. The age of the woman, the number of available embryos and other health factors determine the number of transfers. In most cases, multiple transfers are done to avoid the risk of termination of pregnancy. IVF costs depend on the number of cycles required to lead to pregnancy. This is again dependent on the age and health condition of a woman. For women below the age of 35, the average cost of IVF is $33,784. Similarly for women above 40 and below 44 the range is $ 100,000-$ 312,500. These costs apply to the United States only. The success rate of IVF is also dependent on the age of the mother-to-be. According to the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority the success rate for women under 35 is 29.6%, for 35-37 it is 23.6%, 40-42 is 10.10%, 3.2% for ages 43-44 and 0.7$ for women above 44. IVF is now a very popular method in most countries and constant research is being done to improve upon it. |
| Sexual Position to Determine Baby Gender - How is That Possible? Posted: 30 Jul 2009 07:38 AM PDT Can we really determine or select the gender of our choice? A lot of couples want to choose their own baby gender but they just don't know how to proceed. Today, I want to share with you a method which is proven to be effective to help you to select your own baby gender. How to make a baby boy To produce a baby boy, what a couple should do is to have their sexual intercourse on the very first day of ovulation. During ejaculation, the man must deposit his sperms as close as possible to the egg. In other word, use a deep penetration. The male sperms, also known as the sprinter will use their speed to reach the egg ahead of the female sperms. The best sexual position that you may try is the typical missionary position. The woman should elevate both legs as close as possible to her breasts. This will allow the vagina to be shorter so that the journey of the male sperms will be shorter as well. This will increase the chance for you to conceive a boy. For your information, a male sperm can only live up to 24 hours in a woman's body. How to make a baby girl To produce a baby girl, the best time to have a sexual intercourse is between 3 to 4 days before ovulation. The reason is mainly because the female sperms can live in a woman's body up to 72 hours. And as I said earlier, since the male sperms can only live around 24 hours in a woman's body, definitely the female sperms will win the race as there will be no more male sperms around to compete with. I always recommend the rear penetration method (doggy style). In this position, the vagina will be stretched longer. This will give an advantage to the female sperms (the marathon runner) to take their sweet time to reach the egg. The male sperms will be dead before they have the chance to fertilize the egg and again your chance to conceive a girl will be higher. |
| Exercising and Pregnancy - Keeping You and Your Baby Safe Posted: 30 Jul 2009 07:28 AM PDT Planning for pregnancy and exercise The best time to start planning your health, weight and exercise program is the same time as you are starting to plan your pregnancy; having a strong, fit and healthy body will not only prepare you for the strength and stamina required during your pregnancy, but it will also increase your chances of conception and an easier pregnancy, labour and birth! The other reason to start your health, weight and exercise program prior to conception, is that pregnancy is no time to start anything new as it may cause unwanted stress to you and your baby. Any activity you are doing in the 6 months leading up to your pregnancy is generally ok to continue through the term of your pregnancy, however a visit to your Doctor or Obstetrician is always recommended to discuss the appropriateness of your activities and the intensity at which you should be training through the different stages of your pregnancy. Strength training is now recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and has been associated with:
Exercising during pregnancy Regular exercise during pregnancy will provide you with many benefits when compared to the alternative - a sedentary pregnancy! Keeping fit and active during your pregnancy will assist in preparing your body for the intensity of labour, will assist in your ability to cope with the physically demanding challenges that motherhood brings with it and will also help you to reach your pre-pregnancy weight much faster. The types of exercise you choose do both pre-pregnancy and during your pregnancy should depend on the types of exercise that you enjoy doing; if you don't enjoy what you do, chances are you won't keep it up for long - especially if you are planning for the 6 months prior to your pregnancy and the 9 months to follow. Exercises could include:
Personal Training and pregnancy A great way to keep motivated during your exercise program and to ensure that you are doing the best by your body throughout your journey is to find yourself a personal trainer who is experienced in exercise during pregnancy. There are many advantages to using a personal trainer as they will be aware of the safety considerations for you and your baby as well as correct technique, nutrition, suitable and practical exercise for the preparation of giving birth and of course, support and encouragement! In particular, the benefits of having a personal trainer is to start a supervised strength training program in the six months leading up to your planned pregnancy (and from my experience, healthy clients who plan for pregnancy certainly fall pregnant quickly). Safety considerations for exercise during pregnancy To ensure that your exercise program provides you with all of the wonderful benefits outlined above, you will also need to ensure your safety and that of your baby, so below is a list of safety considerations to be aware of; and remember to always speak to your Doctor or Obstetrician if you are unsure. 1. Avoid Overheating. Your growing baby does not have the same ability to dissipate heat as you do. To avoid overheating:
 2. Avoid saunas and steam baths at all times during pregnancy. 3. Avoid high intensity exercise. Studies have indicated that when a mother's heart rate stays in a range of approximately 140bpm, the foetus has no abnormal responses. To keep exercise intensity at a safe level, follow these guidelines:
 4. Avoid frequent and prolonged exercise after week 28 of your pregnancy. 5. Limit the amount of exercise that you do lying on your back. This is of particular concern from your second trimester on. 6. Avoid the use of hand weights over 0.5kg in weight during aerobic classes. 7. Perform Pelvic Floor (Kegel) Exercises. 8. Wear a good supportive bra. 9. Avoid rapid changes in direction and be very cautious if you are doing Step exercise classes. 10. Stretch gently. 11. Have a light snack approximately 2 hours before exercise and carry a small carton of fruit juice to your workout. 12. Stop exercise: if at any time during your exercise session you feel very hot, faint, dizzy, short of breath, experience vaginal bleeding, have palpitations, blurred vision, or severe or continuous headaches - stop immediately . It is also important to stop if you experience lower abdominal pain, tightness or cramping, back pain or pubic pain. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your obstetrician. |
| Risks of a Drug Induced Pregnancy Posted: 30 Jul 2009 07:27 AM PDT Clomid as a drug is very effective and highly useful for women who are having infertility issues as it induces fertility, aids in getting a woman pregnant and helps her conceive in the traditional and natural way. However there are certain risks associated with the drug, but these risks concerned with taking Clomiphene are minor, and the occurrence of these problems are rare with the success rate still being quite high. Continuous use of the drug without a check of the ovaries at the start of the month can enlarge and cause over stimulated cystic ovaries. Ovarian hyper stimulation can lead to severe pain and can also bring about the twisting and compression of the ovarian blood vessels, sometimes leading to the loss of an ovary. This can be avoided by a routine pelvic exam or ultrasound at the beginning of each cycle. But the unfortunate thing is that many physicians do not perform this process and do not inform their patients of the various ways of avoiding such a mishap.
This has been ensured by the use of larger samples and more adequate statistical techniques which are more full proof and more accurate and have found that there are no such cancer associated risks of ovulation that women should be wary of while using it. The risks associated with the drug as stated above are quite minor and women should not be terrified when using the drug. A judicious and careful use of the drug will yield better results with the constant advice and help of the individual's gynecologist. For more information, please do visit: Clomid |
| How To Sleep Comfortably During Pregnancy - Maternity Pillows! Posted: 30 Jul 2009 07:13 AM PDT Difficulty sleeping during pregnancy is a common occurrence among women. Many factors contribute to the sleeplessness and discomfort at bedtime. Histamines in the body are much higher for pregnant women. This is a result of a rise in hormones such as estrogen and prolactin in the body. Some women complain of being extremely itchy at night and the stretching of the skin around the ever-growing belly may contribute to the discomfort. Lotions such as coco butter and creams enriched in vitamin E may help remedy the itchy skin but it does not really take care of all the sleeping issues. Because of the weight gain, which can be anywhere from 25 to 55 pounds, many women experience moderate to severe back pain. Stomach lying and back lying are out of the question and the only other position would be side lying. This can be painful on the pelvic bones, as well as the hips. Support under the belly and back by way of a maternity pillow is definitely needed to alleviate much of the problem. Traditional body pillows are soft and usually long like the letter 'I'. Pregnancy is a unique time during which the belly and back both need supporting. Many of these pillows feature adjustable straps and other amenities that appeal to pregnant women. They may be scented with lavender or other herbs to help the mother-to-be relax. They also come in a wide variety of colors and fabrics. There are plenty of different styles of maternity body pillows specifically designed for pregnancy. There are U shaped pillows, designed to support belly, back and knees. Without the unique shape of the U pillow, another pillow can be placed between the knees to mimic the support of the U. Some pregnant women feel that this particular pillow can be too large and prefer a smaller, yet supportive one. If cost is an issue, there are styles that range from as low as thirty dollars and others that may cost upwards of $150. The Snoozer, for example, costs $154 and boasts it has down filling and total body support. The product also tells of its patented design, which aligns the spine and hips for ultimate comfort. The more affordable Maternity Pillow priced at around $48.89, is filled with premium hypoallergenic polyfill. It has a 100% cotton cover and the entire pillow is machine washable for easy care. The median pillow, which is priced at $75.50, is called the Sleeping Bean Natural Kapok Body Pillow. This pillow extends to an extra long five and a half feet! This pillow is filled with a material called Kapok, which is found in the rainforest and can hold its shape better than most pillow fillings. The kapok is harvested from pods by indigenous peoples and proves to be a source of employment for them. Maternity pillows with a conscience! For the frugal and crafty expectant mother, there are even sewing patterns that can be purchased to create her very own unique looking maternity pillow out of whichever fabrics of her choosing. Whatever sleeping aids an expectant mother chooses, there is no question that sound sleep is a necessity to keep her energy up! Pregnancy pillows were created to meet just this need, and, with so many options on the market, there is surely a pillow to meet any body size or shape. |
