Posted: 01 Jan 2010 10:26 AM PST A story first: There was a woman once who after several hours of labor, she delivered (vaginally)a healthy baby boy. As she rested and recovered in her labor room (the baby was in the nursery with the new father) she asked for her travel bag which contained her personal items such as a hair brush and toiletries. She exposed an attractive, printed floral bag, reached inside and pulled out a red colored lipstick which she immediately applied while gazing in a little compact mirror. A nurse anxiously stood at her side waiting to assist this new mother to breastfeed her newborn. But, this new mother was not interested in this just yet. As she communicated this to the nurse, the new father had returned from the nursery with the baby to see his wife. The new mother quickly told the nurse to tell him she wasn't ready to receive him. The nurse, frustrated, informed the father to wait a few minutes more. The new mother now anxiously primped herself for company. She brushed her hair and tied it back, applied some blush to her cheeks, checked the condition of her bright red, perfectly polished fingernails, and adjusted her hospital gown. "How do I look?" she asked the nurse. The nurse was baffled that a woman, just giving birth, was more concerned about her appearance than seeing her husband, or even nursing her new baby. The nurse simply replied "you look wonderful. Are you ready?" and eagerly went to get her husband and the newborn. The new mother fluffed her pillows and sat upright in a proud manner and welcomed her husband and carefully embraced her newborn. This story stands out because of the new mother's attitude and behavior to feel and look attractive just moments after having a baby, and before seeing her husband. This is one birth story. There are many more. There's one where a woman was raped, and carried the baby to term. The mother refused to look or touch the baby once born and immediately placed it for adoption. Attitude and circumstance create the "birth experience". Your birth experience will reflect your unique attitudes and circumstance surrounding your pregnancy, birth, and post partum days. This is the difference between your birth story and someone else's. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. ![]() |
Pregnant and Vomiting - Should I Be Worried? Posted: 01 Jan 2010 10:10 AM PST The experience of being pregnant will be one of the most amazing times in the life of many woman. This experience is often diminished though due to the common side effects, like vomiting and nausea, which often accompany pregnancy. The various symptoms of morning sickness are relatively common as an estimated 70-85% of pregnant women are likely to have nausea during their pregnancy. While having this knowledge doesn't make it any easier when it is happening to you, it might at least put into perspective that being pregnant and vomiting is not uncommon. It might also help to know that it not likely to be an issue for your health, or the health of your unborn child, in the longer term. What we know as morning sickness is medically defined as "nausea and vomiting of pregnancy" (NVP). While the condition often occurs more noticeably in the mornings, it could really affect you at any time of the day. If you are pregnant and vomiting then you are clearly going to be in some pain and distress. Sometimes the problem will seem a lot worse if you get no respite from it or if it continues later into pregnancy. The nausea will often commence about the sixth week of your pregnancy and this might still be a time that you are keeping the pregnancy a secret. This can obviously create even more stress for you as it can be difficult to hide your vomiting from work colleagues or your friends. Morning sickness generally lasts until the end of your first trimester although this can vary from person to person. There will be some women that suffer nausea for another two months and even a small percentage that have to put up with it until they actually give birth. Everyone will have a different perspective and experience. While someone might have just a slight bit of queasiness now and again, others might have consistent vomiting that completely disrupts their whole life. Despite numerous studies and untold theories, there is no clear cause for morning sickness. However, all the relevant studies confirm that morning sickness is not a long term threat to the health of your baby. The studies show that women who have pregnant vomiting have babies that are as developed and healthy as those from mothers that were lucky enough not to have any morning sickness symptoms. So while the issue of pregnant vomiting is not necessarily a serious or long term problem, it doesn't mean that you have suffer indefinitely. Various types of treatment are available including home and natural remedies that can easily be implemented to reduce the impact of any symptoms. If you are ever concerned about your nausea, or your health in general, then make sure that you see a medical professional as soon as possible. This is particularly important if the nausea and vomiting extends late into the pregnancy. You need to be sure that both you and the baby are not missing the key nutrients normally obtained from liquids and foods. The doctor will investigate to rule out any other issues that might be causing your continued vomiting. They will also ensure that you do not have a serious but relatively uncommon condition known as hyperemesis gravidarum. This is basically the term used to describe excessive vomiting of pregnant women. It is applied when a women develops severe vomiting and has lost more than 5% of their normal weight. This condition only applies to a very small percentage of pregnant women so should not be something that you will have to concern yourself with. Being pregnant but vomiting or nauseous is clearly no fun and is likely to be a major source of distress for a lot of pregnant women. Try to take action to reduce your symptoms and stay positive by thinking ahead to what it will be like when you are feeling healthy again. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. An Overview of the Causes of Infertility Posted: 01 Jan 2010 08:06 AM PST It is estimated that one in six couples experience infertility. Infertility is defined as the failure to conceive after having had regular unprotected intercourse over 12 months. The causes of infertility are varied but studies have found that around 40% of the problems related to infertility are related to the female, 40% to the male, while 20% of cases are unexplained. The irony of infertility is that most people spend the better part of their lives trying to avoid getting pregnant, only to find out later that there may be problems in trying to conceive. Various causes of infertility in women may include:
Identifiable factors which may affect male fertility include:
Western Medicine
In IVF and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) eggs are collected from follicles in the ovary via surgical procedure. They are then transferred in-vitro (outside the womb) so that they can be fertilized by the sperm to form an embryo. Once successfully fertilised, the embryo is then transferred back inside the women's uterus 2-5 days later. IVF is often suggested when natural methods fail to give results. It should be noted that before extracting eggs, the woman generally takes several hormones to help stimulate the ovaries into producing and maturing more eggs than what would normally be released naturally. Although the IVF process aims to replicate nature, the process of taking eggs from the ovaries, fertilizing them in an outside laboratory and putting them back in the uterus is not natural and involves the use of artificial stimulants. In the normal process, the human body helps pave the way for only the most healthiest of sperm to make their way to the egg and penetrate it but in the artificial process, the decision is made by an embryologist. Whilst a lot is known about sperm and what healthy sperm looks like, it does not mean that the sperm chosen will be the healthiest one that is picked. This is because scientists still have gaps in their knowledge about sperm and are still undertaking further research on this topic. Alternative Therapies
In the alternative treatment techniques, diet and lifestyle changes are very important. Regular intake of caffeine from beverages like coffee, chocolate, cocoa, green tea (containing caffeine), black tea and colored soft drinks is believed to have harmful effects on conception. According to a study, one and a half cups of coffee for a woman who is trying for pregnancy is likely to delay conception. Thus, it is recommended that coffee is avoided for people who suffer from infertility. Good results for the treatment of infertility have also been reported through holistic approaches such as Chinese medicine, acupuncture and reflexology. These alternative approaches suggest that a natural remedy and a way of life that can really solve the problem as soon as the real cause is determined. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Evaluating and Treating Male Infertility Posted: 31 Dec 2009 01:37 PM PST When suffering from infertility concerns, couples often turn to a fully equipped fertility clinic. Male infertility may be a tricky subject for some couples, so receiving expert advice and assistance is often more than welcomed. In cases where the couple is unsure of the precise cause of their infertility, a fertility specialist may put both partners through several tests and examinations to pinpoint the problem. Once the source of their infertility has been established, they may begin advising the couple on possible treatment options. Male infertility treatments may vary greatly depending on the specific problem or condition the patient is suffering from. In some cases, medicines may be used while in others surgery or other procedures may be necessary. There are three basic treatment categories dedicated to this problem: drug therapy, assisted reproductive technologies and surgery. The treatment used in each individual case is designed to correct any mechanical or other problems the patient may have that are preventing him from effectively reproducing Assisted reproduction is a broad category that includes several different treatments. Different methods are often used to obtain sperm, achieve insemination and to treat or cure erectile dysfunction. In vitro fertilization and other assisted reproductive technologies have been used to help couples conceive when natural conception is either difficult or impossible. Drug therapies may include medicines that target sperm or hormone production or fight antibodies that may harm or destroy the patient's sperm. The best way to determine which medication may be used is to speak directly with a fertility specialist at a reputable fertility clinic in the area. Surgery may be used in cases where there is an obstruction in the reproductive tract or to repair or remove varicocele, enlarged veins in the scrotum. Couples interested in learning more about possible male infertility treatments are encouraged to obtain more information from a fertility specialist at a reputable clinic. The 10 Best Exercises Pregnant Women Should Do Posted: 31 Dec 2009 01:13 PM PST There are many choices of exercises pregnant women are able to do. Even though exercising pregnant has certain precautions you should follow, the amount of exercises to choose from are still plentiful. The best exercises pregnant women can do will be an exercise in which: - There is as little risk as possible from falling or bumping your stomach - You can control your body temperature and heart rate to a certain extent - They give the results and benefits your seeking through exercise. Here are the 10 best exercises pregnant women should have in their workout routine: 10) Resistance Exercises Using Bands - I know this is a pretty broad category of exercises, but you can perform nearly any motion using exercise bands. When you become pregnant, you want to eliminate the possibility of dropping a dumbbell on your stomach. This is easily fixed with bands. Increase the amount of reps you get and tone your muscles. 9) Stair Climbing Machine - This machine is a great machine for developing your cardiovascular strength as well as your leg muscles. There is very little risk of falling, and these machines usually have side rails you can balance and hold onto. 8) Cobbler Pose - This exercise works wonders for expanding the hips and stretching the pelvic area. To do this exercise, simply place your feet together with your soles of your feet touching each other. With both knees bent, slowly press your knees apart towards the ground. Hold the bottom position for 10 seconds. 7) Pelvic Tilt - This is just like the Cat Pose used in yoga. This specific exercise is amazing for reducing lower back pain. During pregnancy, this is a very common problem that can be helped with this exercise. Begin on your hands on knees. Keep your back straight with your head facing the floor. While exhaling, gently pull your shoulders upward allowing your lower back to sink downward. Then take a deep controlled breath in and round your back. This will help develop your core and stretch your back. 6) Aerobics - Aerobics can be great for both the beginner and the advanced exerciser. If you never exercised before you got pregnant, I would suggest starting in a beginner or prenatal pregnancy class. They are a great starting point that gives you great overall fitness and direction on where to go. 5) Walking - This is of course one of the most basic exercise forms out there. Walking just 30 minutes a day can have many benefits. It is low impact on your body and will provide a good workout for your legs and lungs. 4) Squat - The squat has so many benefits when used properly no matter what shape your in. While being pregnant, I would suggest doing a plie squat more than your basic squat. Do this by keeping your toes pointed outwards away from each other. Gently lower body to a comfortable level and use your thigh muscles to push upward. 3) Yoga - I covered only one pose in yoga earlier in the article but the other poses have a great benefit as well. Being flexible and balanced is very important to have an easier labor. The practice of controlling your breathing will also play a vital part in this as well as helping you control stress. 2) Swimming - Out of all the exercises pregnant women should be doing, swimming is the number one for an overall body workout. Swimming provides a low impact resistance exercise that requires ever muscle to interact. It will also build up your cardiovascular strength as well. 1) Kegels - Kegels aren't exactly used in an exercise program unless you are pregnant. Any exercise to strengthen the kegel muscle will greatly help with labor. They should never be overlooked especially while pregnant. You can perform these exercises anywhere anytime of the day and no one will notice. To perform a kegel exercise, you have to contract the muscles of the pelvic floor. This can be done by trying to stop the flow of urine. Concentrate on flexing those muscles and hold for 5 seconds each rep. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
