Natural Infertility Treatment - Is it Better Than IVF? Posted: 04 Nov 2009 09:57 AM PST Natural infertility treatment is becoming more and more popular and at this rate will eventually replace IVF as the treatment of choice for infertility. This trend reflects public disquiet at the performance and consequences of IVF treatment, which has come into severe criticism over recent years. When reading the following it's important to remember that it's not just a question of producing a child, but producing a healthy child that can lead a full, healthy and productive life, rather than a child with health problems with all the resultant expense, stress, unhappiness and expenditure of resources. In 2002, a Western Australian study reported that the risk of major birth defects doubled for IVF babies. In 2004 a further report showed there was a 29 per cent increase in the risk of such defects. This figure had risen to 30 per cent by 2007. That same year (2007) saw Lord Winston, one of the pioneers of IVF treatment, attacking the IVF industry for being massively commercial and exploiting couples who were desperate to have a baby. In August 2008 the British Medical Journal reported on an experiment involving 580 women divided into three groups comparable in age, weight, and partner's sperm count. The three groups were given, respectively, IUI, natural infertility treatments, and IVF. The IVF group came a poor third against IUI and natural infertility treatments. In a country like the UK, where one in seven couples experience infertility, with one in three having problems where there is no obvious cause, this finding is of great significance. In February 2009, Dr Nargund, head of reproductive medicine at St George's Hospital in Tooting, South London, UK, published a report in which she stated that not only does IVF treatment not make a lot of difference to the chances of a couple having a child but that it can actually lead to birth defects, cerebral palsy and premature birth, and other dangers for both mother and child. She urged that what she termed "natural solutions to infertility" be given more consideration, and that more attention be paid to the lifestyle of the couple seeking help in starting a family, as the stresses and strains of modern living often conspire against the relaxed, stress-free environment required to achieve maximum fertility and to nurture a healthy foetus to maturity. In the same month, a report published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on research into 18,500 births, showed IVF babies were twice as likely to have heart defects and four and a half times more likely to be susceptible to digestive tract disorders. Risks of other defects, such as bowel disorders and cleft lip, were also increased significantly when IVF treatment was resorted to. According to figures issued by the British Fertility Society, around one per cent more of IVF children suffer from some kind of birth defect, compared to the general population. It, too, favors natural fertility treatment for infertility problems over IVF treatment. Could it be that nature herself favors her own remedies for problems connected with infertility? Perhaps the driving force of nature is forever looking for ways of improving and strengthening the species (no matter what species it may be) so it is given a better chance of survival in a changing world. And could it be that enabling couples whose genetic make-up is not up to standard, in whatever way, to nevertheless contribute towards making the next generation, is not something that nature looks upon kindly. Perhaps that's why natural cures are always better than artificial cures, in the sphere of fertility as much as anywhere else. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. ![]() |
An Overview of Hormone Infertility Posted: 04 Nov 2009 09:55 AM PST Instability in hormonal levels is associated with a whole lot of health related issues. Men and women can suffer from this problem and infertility can stem from this problem. A significant factor of hormone imbalances are age related. Age related hormone infertility treatments are a contentious issue. Being aware of some of the causes of these hormonal imbalances that can lead to infertility will benefit you in your quest to overcome your infertility. So how does hormone infertility affects you. Hormones are the main players in how the male and female reproductive system functions. Just a small imbalance in the hormonal levels can throw the whole lot out of whack. For a woman the most common symptom of hormones that are out of whack is irregular periods. A lot of women have irregular periods and it is all because of their hormones that are out of balance. A woman's menstrual cycle have 3 distinct phases, namely the follicular phase, the luteal phase and the ovulatory phase. The production of the eggs and the preparation of the uterus to nurture an egg are dependent on these 3 phases working correctly. In the 1st phase the development of the follicle starts in the ovary. If there is a imbalance in the hormones at this stage then the eggs will not develop properly leading on to that the egg won't be able to implant properly in to the wall of the uterus. So the sperm and egg don't join and so it becomes impossible to fall pregnant. What treatments are available out there for hormone infertility? Some of the most advanced treatments are applied these days for treatment of hormonal imbalances that lead to infertility. It involves artificially manipulating the hormones to correctly get the message to the various organs to produce healthy eggs and to get the uterus in the correct state for implantation of the egg. Depending on what medication are used to correct an imbalance of which hormones that affect which phase in the menstrual cycle there will be different outcomes. Normally medication is used to re-balance the production of the eggs. This is to get the eggs to develop properly, get released at the right time and mature in the right way to be available to the sperm for fertilization. Other medication is used for the phase where the uterine lining needs to develop to be ready to receive the fertilized egg. Let's look at the advantages of these treatments. If there is a problem with the quality of the eggs that lead to hormone infertility then treatment are directed towards producing healthy eggs. With treatment the ovulatory phase will be improved. With the hormones now in balance the follicles will be healthy and produce healthy eggs. That is why the chances of falling pregnant become better. The healthy fertilized egg now needs a healthy environment to develop in further. This is where hormonal medication can help to prepare the uterine lining to have it in a optimum condition to receive the egg. Then the embryo needs to attach and be nurtured by the uterine lining to be able to carry the pregnancy to term. Now as with all medications there are risks and side effects. That is why more and more people are opting for the more natural acupuncture assisted hormone infertility treatments. Getting these individual medical dosages just right to minimize the side effects and maximizing the desired effects are tricky and is different for every woman. It can be difficult to determine which phase and which hormones or combinations are causing the hormone infertility. It is best to consult an acupuncturist or doctor that specializes in infertility especially if you suffer for irregular periods and you are trying to become pregnant but are unable to do so. Getting Pregnant After a Miscarriage and Staying Pregnant Posted: 04 Nov 2009 09:51 AM PST No one can tell you exactly how sad it can be losing a baby. Coping with miscarriage is a huge and personal process, and hopefully one that you can at least share with your partner. Miscarriage is does not mean you cant have children, and it is more common than you probably think it is. Happily, many couples go on to have one, two or more happy healthy children after they have suffered the tragedy of miscarriage. According to the American pregnancy association, miscarriage can be described as any pregnancy ending on its own within 20 weeks of conception. Medically, miscarriage is referred to as Spontaneous Abortion. Also, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has given the prevalence of miscarriage as a range of 10 to 25% Relevant authorities reveal that the most miscarriages occur within the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. In fact, many miscarriages occur without the woman's knowledge! The reason is simple; such miscarriages usually result in bleeding coinciding with a woman's menstrual period. Therefore it goes unnoticed. Here comes another manifestation of the knowledge of God. Do you know that most miscarriages occur due to chromosomal abnormalities in the zygote? That means a miscarriage is often nature's way of saving you the heartache of an abnormal baby. That goes to demonstrate the wisdom and truth in the saying "every cloud has a silver lining"! A note of caution though....the smoking habit and drug use have been identified as potential causes of miscarriage. So is the often neglected danger of excessive caffeine intake and malnutrition. Exposures to toxic substances and radiation have also been implicated. Now, after having a miscarriage, the natural question on mind is how soon can I now get pregnant again? Giving a straight answer to that question, you can get pregnant immediately you stop bleeding! However, if the issue is how soon it is safe to get pregnant after a miscarriage, then doctors advise anything between 6 weeks and 6 months is safe This content has passed through fivefilters.org. ![]() |

Using Herbs For Fertility Treatment Posted: 04 Nov 2009 08:55 AM PST Herbs have been used as an alternative medicine to treat many medical ailments. As herbs have not been widely studied and researched, it is not very clear what side effects they have. Herbs are not regulated by Food And Drugs Administration (FDA). So take them with precautions. A TCM practitioner should be able to recommend you a combination of herbs for fertility problems. Some herbs are known to be beneficial to improve fertility problems. However, if they are taken in combination with western medicine, they may have undesirable reaction. If you would like to try herbs, make sure that all your doctors are aware of the types of herbs you are taking. Herbs are available in tablet, granulated powder, tincture or raw forms. You will usually be recommended the daily dosage. Do not take more than what is recommended. You may experience some side effects. Do be alert of the changes in your body after taking these herbs so that adjustments or changes of herbs can be made to suit your conditions. Below are some popular herbs that may be able to promote healthy reproductive organ systems and boost fertility. Black cohosh - It relieves menstrual discomfort and menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. The side effects are dizziness, nausea, low pulse rate and increased perspiration. Dong quai - It regulates hormones and menstrual cycle. It is commonly used to treat Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), one of the common causes of infertility. As dong quai is a blood thinner, it should not be taken during an IVF cycle or by women who have very heavy periods. Men may also use it to improve sperm quality. Chasteberry (Vitex) - It improves the normal production of hormones and helps to promote ovulation. Some believe that chasteberry can increase progesterone levels and should not be used before ovulation. False unicorn root - It improves menstrual irregularities and alleviates menopause problems and infertility problems due to irregular formation of follicles. It is also used to relieve symptoms of endometriosis and ovarian cysts. Red clover - It helps to increase estrogen levels and improves hormonal balance. Red raspberry leaf - It helps to thicken the uterine lining making it more receptive to the embryo implantation. Red raspberry causes uterine contractions and should not be used in early pregnancy. Wild yam - It relieves menstrual discomfort, promotes progesterone production and improves hormone balance. Don't take wild yam until ovulation occurs. Ginseng - It regulates hormones and relieves stress. Nettle leaves - It tones the uterus and prepare it for proper implantation of the embryo. Primrose oil - It increases cervical mucus making it easier for the sperm to reach the egg. It may make the uterus lining thinner making it more difficult for the egg to implant properly. Saw palmetto - It reduces enlarged male prostate and strengthens male reproductive system. You should stop taking these herbs after you get pregnant. This list is just for your guidance. You should consult your TCM practitioner or naturopathic physician before taking these herbs for fertility. Some people find it beneficial to use herbs for fertility treatment. Some use it as an alternative treatment after all other treatments have failed. However, make sure that you get proper guidance from your physicians and doctors.
