Antidepressants Linked To Heart Defects In Newborns - Central Florida News 13 Posted: 27 Sep 2009 08:23 PM PDT Reported by Christine Webb ORLANDO -- Women who take certain antidepressants during the first three months of pregnancy may have a slightly increased risk of giving birth to babies with heart defects. Septal heart defects -- malformations in the wall separating the right side of the heart from the left -- were more common among women taking antidepressants in the first trimester, Danish researchers found. Some of those heart defects resolve on their own, while others require surgery. The risks were seen in Zoloft and in Celexa, both of which belong to the class of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. Women who took more than one SSRI early in their pregnancy had a fourfold higher risk of having babies with this problem. Still, researchers said the absolute risk is relatively low. Previous studies have found that pregnant women who stopped taking their antidepressant medications were five times more likely to relapse than women who continued with the medication. In the U.S., 13 percent of women have taken an antidepressant while pregnant. It is always best to talk with your doctor first, as everyone requires a unique treatment plan.

Wrong-embryo baby's parents praise 'angel' - Aiken Standard Posted: 27 Sep 2009 07:54 PM PDT "It's been a long, difficult journey, and we're thrilled that our family is now complete," the Morells said. "We will be eternally grateful for his guardian angel, Carolyn Savage, and the support of the entire Savage family. We're looking forward to spending the next few weeks getting to know our new baby." The boy was born Thursday at 5 pounds and 3 ounces at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. He measured 18 inches long. In a statement Friday, the Savages offered congratulations to the Morells. "At this time, we would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to the Morell family on the birth of their son," the Savages' statement said. "We wish Paul, Shannon, their twin girls and their new baby boy the best as they move forward with their lives together." The Savages asked for privacy in the days ahead, saying "Our family is going through a very difficult time." The Savages extended thanks to people around the world for their support and prayers. They thanked medical professionals for their care and treatment throughout the pregnancy and delivery. They say a fertility clinic outside Ohio transferred the wrong frozen embryo in February. Ten days later, they got a call from a doctor at the clinic saying she was pregnant with someone else's child. The Savages said they never considered terminating the pregnancy or trying to fight for custody. They have hired attorneys who say they are working to make sure the fertility clinic accepts responsibility. The Morells, who live in Troy, Mich., found out about the fertility clinic mistake a day after the Savages. The two couples knew nothing about each other. Shannon feared the pregnant woman would choose abortion, ending their chance to give their 2-year-old twin girls a sibling. A few days passed before they learned that the Savages were not only willing to continue with the pregnancy but also to hand over the baby without hesitation. "This was someone else's child," 40-year-old Carolyn Savage told the AP on Wednesday. "We didn't know who it was. We didn't know if they didn't have children or if this was their last chance for a child." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Collier School Board to decide if classroom is the place to learn ... - Naples Daily News Posted: 27 Sep 2009 04:19 PM PDT Some say it is information every teenager needs. Others say the information should not be taught in school. The Collier County School Board will have the final say as they host a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday to discuss possible revisions to the district's sexual education policy. The board voted 3 to 2 in July to revise the policy. Board Chairwoman Pat Carroll and board member Steve Donovan dissented. The issue was brought forward by member Richard Calabrese. He believes the School Board Policy 2417, which deals with comprehensive sex education, needs to change to specifically state the curriculum should address the concepts of "reproductive and sexual health, including the risks and benefits of contraception and sexually transmitted disease-prevention methods, the consequences of teenage pregnancy, responsible decision making, and abstinence as the only certain way to avoid pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections." The current policy reads that the curriculum should address "an awareness of the benefits of sexual abstinence as the expected standard and the consequences of teenage pregnancy." But the majority of board members thought that policy was too vague. Board member Julie Sprague said a supplement to the sex education curriculum, which includes information about contraception, is used in Collier County classrooms, but not all of them. Board member Steve Donovan disagreed, saying the policy and Collier County followed the state curriculum. He said he believed the policy needed to stay the way it was and the district should monitor classes to ensure it is being presented correctly. Florida statute requires schools to mandate a health course that teaches students the "benefits of sexual abstinence as the expected standard and the consequences of teenage pregnancy." The curriculum must also "emphasize that abstinence from sexual activity is a certain way to avoid out-of-wedlock pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)." Collier County schools teach sex education at both the middle and high school levels. In middle schools, sex education is taught for 10 days in science classes. The curriculum, which includes a text previewed and selected by a committee of teachers, administrators and community members, teaches students that abstinence is the only sure way to avoid STDs, HIV and pregnancy. The curriculum also addresses the reproductive systems, the use of condoms and sexual decision making. At the high school level, students have to take one credit in physical education to include the integration of health education. The course contents include abstinence as the only sure protection, lessons about the male and female reproductive systems, breast and testicular self exams, pregnancy and fetus development, STDs and AIDS, blood borne pathogens and birth control. In addition, the school must provide question boxes for students to ask questions anonymously. The teacher has discretion in answering questions and they are answered directly and honestly or researched by the teacher and students. On-site school nurses are also available to all secondary students to answer questions. Parents may choose to opt their child out of the program if they have objections. The meeting will be held in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Administrative Center, 5775 Osceola Trail. - - - Connect with Collier County education reporter Katherine Albers at www.naplesnews.com/staff/katherine_albers. Column: Republicans insult gay community, again - U-Wire.com Posted: 27 Sep 2009 09:49 PM PDT
BREAKING NEWS — After all these years, scientists have finally discovered the reason why some people are gay! Homosexuality is a direct result of, you guessed it, pornography, specifically Playboy, according to Michael Schwartz, chief of staff to Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma. That's a rather bold statement from a congressional staff member. Speaking at this year's Values Voters Summit, Schwartz made this outlandish claim, and others, including "All pornography is homosexual pornography because all pornography turns your sexual drive inward." Unfortunately, his reasoning here is somewhat lacking. I have serious doubts a magazine filled with pictures of boobs causes this "plague" we call homosexuality. Teen boys across the country would probably roll over laughing at such an assertion. I mean, if someone looks at boobs and thinks, "Gross, I think I'll stick with guys," maybe he's actually just inclined to liking men. I also have a hard time believing homosexuality suddenly sprung up during the 20th century. I mean, did Alexander the Great and Richard the Lion Heart really have access to porn? Maybe I'm being too logical. After all, statements like this were a dime a dozen at the bastion of knowledge that is the Values Voters Summit. The values emphasized at the summit are true American values, such as the rejection of pretty much all scientific fact relating to climate change and that rugged individualism which comes with labeling this country's ruling political party socialistic. An important sidenote here: this was the same summit where former Miss California Carrie Prejean got up and explained to attendees how God was testing her the day she voiced her opposition to gay marriage. Now, it's fine if you are against gay marriage — I myself have a few reservations about it — but please do not claim God was somehow testing you. Statements like this have no place in a country faced with an unending amount of problems, among them teen health and pregnancy. Sexuality and sex need to be more openly talked about. Why? Because without it, the U.S. will continue to have one of the highest rates of teen pregnancies in the developed world. If you're looking for proof behind this, Google Sarah or Bristol Palin. Ask yourselves, how many of your friends are virgins? Maybe my friends are more promiscuous than most, but I'd say at least four in five of my friends at LSU have had sex. Instead, what we need to be talking about is how to prevent teen pregnancies. And by that, I don't mean throwing around condoms and calling it a day. Rather, there needs to be a class in high school where teens are really taught the burdens of being a teen parent. Furthermore, such classes should stress the devastating effects of STDs, particularly ones like herpes and HIV that don't go away. It is also the responsibility of parents to have an honest conversation with their children about sex. Rather than sheltering kids, parents need to be honest and explain the reality of the world they will face. If such honesty and openness were to result in lower teen pregnancy rates, then this would also result in a reduced abortion rate. If Schwartz's ridiculous statements could somehow start a debate about sex and sexuality, then at least some good came as a result. But if he believes boobs in Playboy somehow made me like boys, then I have to wonder about the state of affairs in Sen. Coburn's office if it's being led by someone so blatantly stupid. Embryo mix-up mother is 'baby's guardian angel' - Independent Posted: 27 Sep 2009 08:44 PM PDT A woman who gave birth to a baby boy after a fertility clinic implanted her with the wrong embryo is a "guardian angel", the boy's biological parents said yesterday. Paul and Shannon Morell, Detroit in the US, said that they would be "eternally grateful" to Carolyn Savage, of Sylvania, for her decision to give birth to their child despite the traumatic mistake made by the clinic. "It's been a long, difficult journey and we're thrilled that our family is now complete," the Morells said.
