(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Doppler ultrasound, used in high-risk pregnancies to monitor a fetus's health, may reduce the number of Caesarean sections and still births.

Doppler ultrasound is a technique used to diagnose problems during pregnancy. Doppler ultrasound monitors the rate of umbilical blood flow in much the same way a speed radar measures how fast cars are traveling. Professionals can use this information to see whether the fetus is healthy with a normal blood flow, or is under stress with an abnormal blood flow. Health professionals can then decide which high-risk pregnancies will need assistance with delivery, and which women can deliver without assistance.

While the purpose of Doppler is to reduce risk to the baby, some experts argue that it may prompt some unnecessary early interventions. Researchers in the UK reviewed 18 studies which included 10,000 "high risk" women. High risk women included those who had previously miscarried, those carrying growth restricted babies and women with hypertension or diabetes. Women who were examined with Doppler ultrasound were compared with those who had no Doppler or with those who had cardiotocography (CTG), which monitors the baby's heartbeat.

According to the results, Doppler reduced infant deaths, possibly through better timing of Caesarean sections, as well as reducing the number of Caesarean sections themselves, and inductions of labor. However, the researchers say, the studies included were of questionable quality.

"A case could certainly be made for a higher quality, multi-centre trial of Doppler ultrasound than we have so far seen," lead researcher Zarko Alfirevic, who is based at the Division of Perinatal and Reproductive Medicine at the University of Liverpool, was quoted as saying. "It is quite possible that for some so-called high risk groups fetal Doppler offers little or no benefit. Women with diabetes are one such group where fetal Doppler may, in fact, give false reassurance."

Dr. Alfirevic explained, "It is important to point out, of course, that it is the clinical decision that follows a Doppler ultrasound examination that changes the outcome for the baby, and currently there is little agreement on what intervention should follow an abnormal Doppler finding."

TERRE HAUTE — In the eyes of Sharon Carey, executive director of the Crisis Pregnancy Center of the Wabash Valley, Scott Womack stacks up better than his franchise's signature pancakes.

The center on Monday awarded its first Outstanding Service Award to Womack, president of Womack Restaurants, an International House of Pancakes franchisee with 11 stores, nine in Indiana and two in Ohio.

This year, Womack's 11 IHOP stores gave out 12,308 free short stacks of pancakes, raising more than $12,000 on National Pancake Day in February. In Terre Haute, the event raised $1,200, which was donated to Crisis Pregnancy Center of the Wabash Valley.

IHOP began its National Pancake Day in 2006 as a way to donate to various charities. Customers to an IHOP restaurant are given free pancakes for donations during the day.

This year, the event topped 2009's more than 9,400 short stacks of pancakes and more than the $9,000 raised for charities last year.

"IHOP started National Pancake Day and gave us the option to select a local charity, and so this was natural thing for us," Womack said, "as we sponsor their main banquet and their Walk for Life, two separate events. We are deeply involved with them and do a variety of things.

"As we open new restaurants in other towns around Indiana and Ohio, we go to those centers and offer our support there as well. It keeps us tied in with the community and creates a very real bond with the community," Womack said.

Carey said the award was the first by the Terre Haute organization.

"He is definitely the person we wanted to honor with the first award," Carey said, adding that Womack previously served on the board of directors for the Crisis Pregnancy Center for more than 14 years, serving at one time as board chairman.

"He has been a vital part of our center," Carey said.

The center is at 1527 Poplar St. in Terre Haute.

"All of our services are free," Carey said. "We offer a variety of services, from free pregnancy tests and testing and treatment for certain sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia and also provide a variety of support groups for moms and dads," Carey said.

While only 20 percent of women responded that they'd be "a little pleased" or "very pleased," a larger 43 percent of young men answered the same. Among the 18-19 year old age range, 34 percent of men said they'd be pleased. That number jumps to 42 percent for 20-24-year olds, and more than 50 percent for guys aged 25-29. Only 16 percent of women ages 18-24 would be pleased by a surprise pregnancy. The percentage soars to 29 for 25-29 year-old women.

"The Gloucester 18," a 67-minute documentary about teen pregnancy in that community, tells the tale of what became a national story from the perspective of the locals -- and the local media that first reported the story.

The Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy hosted the Thursday premier, which included a pre-show reception and a five-member panel discussion after the show. An audience of almost 300 attended the private screening at the Kendall Square Cinema in Cambridge.

"We thought it was an opportunity to have the girls tell their story," director John Michael Williams said to the audience before the film started.

The film opens with recognizable scenes of Gloucester: the "Man at the Wheel" Fishermen's Memorial, an American flag rippling in the wind, children playing on a playground. These are distinctive images of Gloucester; but also universal images of American life in a small town.

The spark for the national story came with a report in Time Magazine that several girls in the community had intentionally become pregnant as part of an alleged "pact.'' The allegation about a "pact" was never proven, but it drew national attention to Gloucester.

Panelist and local free lance journalist Anne Driscoll referred to herself as "part of the deluge that ended up in Gloucester." She said when she first arrived on the scene, that she couldn't walk five feet without tripping over a reporter. "I'm proud to be a journalist," she said, "but I am not always proud of the way journalists behave."

One panel member pointed out that her everyday work with teen parents -- both moms and dads -- is often overlooked by the media.

"I have never walked into the building tripping over a reporter…or gotten a million phone calls or offered any money," said panelist Elizabeth Wood, Putnam High School school adjustment counselor, "…for doing the work that I do every day for the 70 to 80 teen moms in my building and a growing number of dads."

Driscoll offered advice to not assume that journalists have a baseline knowledge of an issue, and to find people who are willing to listen.

The documentary is billed as a "groundbreaking documentary film that follows the Gloucester pregnancy pact from inside the lives of the pregnant teenagers and their families.'' It will be shown on a limited basis in area.

The film stands in contrast to a recent Lifetime movie loosely based on the facts of the 2008 sensation in Gloucester.

Panelist Consuela Greene, Mass Alliance prevention program coordinator, said the Gloucester story became national news because it was not the stereotype of teen pregnancies—poor, Black or Latina girls, or inner city kids. "It became a story because it was white families and white faces," she said. "It was debunking the myth."

The documentary features clips from the national media frenzy. Sound bites from The Today Show, CBS Evening News, Fox News, Good Morning America, and CNN are included. Even Jay Leno in an opening monologue, after calling Massachusetts his home state, joked that the Gloucester 18 are "Juno," the home game.

"We certainly are fascinated by it," producer Kristen Grieco said from her seat on the panel. "So walk out, keep talking…be open to a difficult topic to talk about," she said.

"I hope that this film goes far and wide," said Dr. Brian Orr during the panel discussion, with his daughter sitting next to him in the audience. "Now Kim and I see that we can have the conversation that we were trying to have [about teen contraception] two years ago," he said. Dr. Orr and Kim Daly, a nurse practitioner, worked at the Gloucester High School Health Clinic, and both later resigned from their positions.

"I just have one comment to make," said Sarah Williams, one of the Gloucester teens featured in the film, to the panel and audience at the close of the night. "You made a judgment [that] the mothers looked young and lost," she said, with boyfriend Pedro Gonzalez seated next to her. "I am not lost. I have goals. I go to college. I work," she said holding back tears as the audience applauded her.

Patricia Quinn, Mass Alliance executive director, thanked Sarah for her words and said the film shows the full spectrum of teen pregnancies. "There are young people…like Sarah and Pedro, who we feel are going to do okay," Quinn said. "And then there are other young people who I am afraid about what will happen for them." According to the fact sheet that Mass Alliance handed out at the end of the discussion, there are over 10,000 teen pregnancies every year in Massachusetts.

Quinn said adults often don't really support young people in planning to have sex. "Do we support them in making that decision [to buy condoms], or do we judge them?" Quinn asked the audience.

"The next time you see a young person parenting…think differently about what you see," Quinn said to the audience. "None of us do it by ourselves."

Women who take strategic serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants during pregnancy are twice as likely to give birth prematurely as women who do not take the drugs, according to a study published in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine and funded by the Danish Medical Research Council.

Many of the most popular depressants are SSRIs, such as Prozac.

Researchers compared rates of premature birth between different women receiving prenatal care at the same hospital in Aarhus, Denmark. They compared women who were depressed and taking SSRIs with those who were depressed and not on any drugs, as well as those who did not suffer from depression.

Women who took SSRIs while pregnant were two times as likely to give premature birth as those who did not take the drugs. On average, they gave birth four to five days earlier (relative to their due dates) than women who did not take the drugs.

The researchers also found that the risk of an infant needing intensive care immediately after birth was significantly increased by SSRI use during pregnancy. While only 7 percent of babies born to non-depressed mothers needed intensive care, along with only 9 percent of those born to depressed mothers who were not taking drugs, 16 percent of babies born to women who had used SSRIs while pregnant required treatment in an intensive care unit.

Babies born to SSRI-using mothers also appeared less healthy than other babies, the researchers said, based on measures including skin color, activity level after birth, pulse, breathing and response to external stimuli.

Previous studies have confirmed that SSRIs can cross the placental barrier into the fetal bloodstream, and that infants born to women who used the drugs during pregnancy can suffer from withdrawal symptoms.

Health professionals recommend that women who are taking SSRIs and are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant speak with a doctor about their options, rather than stopping treatment abruptly. Side effects of antidepressant withdrawal can be severe.

While our country stands at a deadlock over legislation to ensure that millions of uninsured people have health care coverage, we can at least feel confident that some state legislators are hard at work, making it more difficult for women to access health care and much easier for states to put them, and the people who help them, in jail.

In Mississippi, legislators proposed a law, HB 695, which would make many forms of midwifery a crime. That is clearly bad for pregnant women and for babies for at least one very simple reason. As the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood pointed out after Hurricane Katrina, when hospitals shut down as a result of a disaster, midwives are among the few who know how to deliver babies without electronic fetal monitors, surgical theatres or epidurals. For this reason, the Alliance highlighted the need to protect (not criminalize) midwives who have the skills needed under such circumstances.

When disasters hit, however, it is not only the women who are going to term who are in trouble. As the National Network of Abortion Funds found out after Hurricane Katrina forced abortion providers to close their doors, many women were also left without access to urgently needed abortion services.

If Utah lawmakers have their way, a woman under similar circumstances who attempts to take matters into her own hands could be charged with murder under House Bill 12, the state's effort to outlaw "self-abortions."

Right-to-life organizations have long maintained that if abortion were outlawed, only doctors who performed the abortions would go to jail. But Utah's proposed law ensures that women themselves, and not just those who help them, will be incarcerated for a minimum of 15 years. (Since 61 percent of women who have abortions are already mothers, a woman convicted under this law would, with any luck, be out of jail in time to see her son or daughter graduate from high school.)

Even without such a law, police officers in Iowa recently arrested a woman in her second trimester of pregnancy for the crime of attempted feticide after she tripped and fell down a flight of stairs. The county attorney's office dropped the case only after they decided that their unprecedented interpretation of the feticide law should only be applied to pregnant women in their third trimester. But in Utah, the law would expressly apply to pregnant women at all stages of pregnancy. So, if you are pregnant and clumsy in Utah, you could be charged with attempted murder, even in the first trimester.

As a sign-on petition opposing the Utah bill points out, pretty much any woman who suffers a miscarriage or stillbirth and is engaged in an activity that she "should have reason to know" would endanger her fetus can now be charged with murder or attempted murder.

Suffer a pregnancy loss after a car accident you may have caused? Murder. Follow your doctor's advice to treat your cancer despite the risks it might pose to your unborn child? Attempted murder.

Bizarrely, the Utah law has an exemption that protects women who "fail to follow medical advice," but nothing in the law protects women who do follow medical advice. Thus women who disagree with a doctor's advice to have cesarean surgery can't be prosecuted, but a woman who takes prescription medications that may risk harm to an unborn child could end up behind bars.

Meanwhile, in Kentucky, House Bill 136 would create a new crime just for pregnant women. According to this law, "[a] woman is guilty of substance endangerment of a child prior to birth when, knowing she is pregnant, she causes her child to be born" with controlled substances or alcohol in the child's bodily fluids. What that means is that, if this law is passed, it would literally be a crime for a pregnant woman to give birth if the child she gives birth to has any amount of a controlled substance or alcohol in its body.

It is well known that laws which threaten to punish women who carry their pregnancies to term in spite of a drug or alcohol problem place substantial pressure on women to have unwanted abortions. This is because it is hard for people to overcome an addiction quickly (just ask Rush Limbaugh). For pregnant women who face many barriers to treatment, there is no guarantee that they will be cured quickly enough to be sure they won't be arrested if they go to term. Such laws are also known to deter women from care, increasing the risks to maternal, fetal and child health. It would be nice to think that Kentucky legislators did not mean to make it a crime for some woman to cause their children "to be born," but the fact that this law has been proposed over the objections of every leading health group makes us wonder.

And finally, we wonder about Nebraska's commitment to protecting fetuses from pain. Nebraska House Bill 1103 would protect some fetuses from pain by banning virtually all women from obtaining abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy. Although abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy are extremely rare (constituting only 1.5 percent of all abortions), and the doctors who perform them are heroes to the women who need such procedures, this law would make those doctors criminals.

The Nebraska legislators who support this bill claim that after 20 weeks of pregnancy an unborn child is capable of experiencing substantial pain. Certainly, if this is true, then fetuses must also suffer pain from forceps deliveries, internal electronic fetal monitoring (requiring the insertion of sharp metal wires into the delicate fetal scalp) and from chemically induced labor in which the fetus is subjected to repeated, violent maternal uterine contractions and then forced through the narrow vaginal canal. If Nebraska legislators were truly committed to preventing fetal pain, then they should also ban pitocin-induced vaginal births and other fetal-pain inducing delivery techniques and arrest the doctors who carry them out.

The lawmakers supporting these bills claim that they are trying to bar bad things from happening to pregnant women and the unborn. But whatever their stated good intentions, make no mistake, these bills are really about putting pregnant women and the people who support them behind bars.

Health concerns after bacteria present in mother's mouth found in stillborn baby

PREGNANT WOMEN have been warned not to ignore dental problems following the case of an unnamed woman with the common gum disease gingivitis who delivered a stillborn baby at 39 weeks.

Doctors were able to trace the oral bacteria in the 35-year-old mother's mouth to bacteria found in the baby's bloodstream, lungs and stomach.

The research was carried out by microbiologist Yiping Han in the Department of Periodontics at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, Ohio.

The findings, published in the February issue of Obstetrics Gynecology , suggest that any disruption to the amniotic fluid could present a risk to both mother and baby – making the infection from gum disease a real risk.

Researchers from Queen Mary University of London have also found that bacteria from a woman's mouth could be transferred through blood and amniotic fluid to her child while still in the womb.

The bacteria can cause potentially serious problems including premature birth, low birth weight, premature contractions and infection. While the researchers could not explain the cause of many pregnancy complications, they believe good oral hygiene can help to reduce the risks.

Gingivitis, a reversible inflammatory condition of the gingival tissues, is characterised by redness of the gum tissues, bleeding, tenderness and sensitivity.

Periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease, results in the loss of the tooth's supporting structures and surrounding bone, and is a major cause of tooth loss in adults.

Periodontist Dr Paul Quinlan says that we need to treat certain findings with caution. "There is evidence that periodontal disease may play a role in causing pre-term and low birth weight babies.

"The most likely cause for this occurrence is the release by oral bacteria of a compound called prostaglandin. High levels of this 'labour-inducing' chemical has been found in women with severe periodontal disease," he says.

However, he adds that while the research continues there is no consensus. "The link between early term and low birth weight babies and periodontal disease is not conclusively proven. If we put it in context, most people will have some evidence of inflammation in their mouths," he says.

Researchers are also looking at links between gum disease, heart disease, strokes and diabetes," adds Quinlan.

Dentist Denis Daly says the recent dental health cuts mean that the benefits of the twice-yearly cleaning will be lost as people neglect their oral healthcare.

"There is a huge benefit to the health of the country by improving dental health," he says.

"There is even a proven link between pneumonia and plaque bacteria as the bacteria builds up and is inhaled into the lungs."

Dental hygienists advise on brushing and ensuring that the teeth are kept clean, especially along the gum line. It is important for a dentist to know if a patient is pregnant since X-rays, dental anaesthetics, pain medications and antibiotics are best avoided.

Regular check-ups with the dentist and dental hygienist during pregnancy can prevent dental problems from occurring.

Cravings and hunger during pregnancy can mean that women snack more frequently and indulge in sweet treats.

Tooth decay can be prevented by brushing the teeth after eating snacks and by limiting the snacks eaten between meals. It is recommended that sweet treats should be eaten following a meal rather than in between meals.

Many women suffer from nausea and vomiting during their pregnancy which can have a detrimental effect on the teeth. Repeated vomiting can cause acid damage to the teeth's enamel.

"Pregnant women often have inflamed gums and although they may not have more plaque than normal, they may be more susceptible to the effects of plaque and can experience bleeding and swelling of the gums," says Quinlan.

"The old wives' tale of losing a tooth for every baby is probably directly linked to gum disease but it doesn't have to be so. If pregnant women floss and brush well, they should have no problems."

Good oral health during pregnancy is important to the overall health of both expectant mothers and their babies.

"By looking after your teeth and gums in a positive way, people can play a role in their own oral care and reduce the risk of future dental problems," says Quinlan.

Depression is difficult enough, but for pregnant women, it can present additional problems. Most antidepressant medications are classified to be FDA pregnancy category C or D. Category C means that animal studies have shown an adverse effect and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women or that animal studies have been conducted and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Category D means that studies, adequate well-controlled or observational, in pregnant women have demonstrated a risk to the fetus. However, the benefits of therapy may outweigh the potential risk. Neither of these are attractive to pregnant women; they're very worrisome.

Things are no less worrisome and confusing after the baby is born. Nobody can really say whether it's safe for the baby to breast feed while the mother is taking antidepressants. Most antidepressants are labeled as "safety unknown" or "probably safe." A few are labeled as "safe," but most women worry about those too.

She believes, rightfully so, that I need to "be strong for both of us" this time around. Easier said than done, however, as every time she seems peppy, hungry or not sore, I fear the worst is about to happen -- again.

Any advice so I can maybe at least fake some strength here?

First of all, congratulations -- this is joyous news. You're prepared for it to take a devastating turn, I understand. But expecting bad news will neither prevent the bad news from happening, nor make it hurt less if it comes.

Please remind yourself of this often, particularly when you're about to ask your wife how she feels. "Do you feel sick?" etc., isn't "making" anything "sure." You're merely finding out if she still feels pregnant, and that's a very different thing. Please internalize the obvious: None of your questions has any effect on the pregnancy itself.

And while that might feel like torture -- i.e., helplessness to prevent the worst -- try seeing it instead as liberating. You are under no pressure to make this work. It's not up to you anymore.

That frees you to concentrate on what you can do. You can buy and prepare healthy foods, keep up with the laundry, plan diverting (as in, distracting) things for you and your wife to do -- catch movies or exhibits or games, hike local trails, see friends.

You can take on house projects that aren't baby-specific but that would be useful preparations, like building shelves and cleaning out closets.

In other words, give yourself a definitive education on what you can and can't control, then put that education to work.

Get your hands and mind occupied with something other than things beyond your control -- among them, the minute-by-minute fluctuations of your wife's physical state -- and help her do the same. If this proves to be impossible, then it might be time to get outside help with your anxiety, and grief.

Either way, you can get your spirit engaged in something more positive and productive, too.

Say to yourself privately, and to your wife aloud, "We'll be OK" -- because you will, no matter what.

With only three months left until her first child is due, Tiffani Thiessen is "feeling great" – and feeling differently about her diet.

"I was a vegetarian for many, many, many years and all of a sudden I started to crave red meat," Thiessen tells PEOPLE at Thursday's USA network and Vanity Fair bash in New York. "Crazy enough, I had a steak before I left tonight and I would never have eaten one before. One day I just woke up and craved meat."

In addition to steaks, the White Collar star, 36, is also enjoying foot rubs from her husband, Brady Smith.

"He rubs my feet, my shoulders and he always gets anything for me even if I'm all hormonal," she says. "I have the best husband and he's a sweetheart."

As for whether the two will be decorating the nursery pink or blue, that's top secret – at least publicly. "I couldn't wait to find out," Thiessen, who is keeping the baby's sex private, says. "Are you kidding? My husband I were way too excited to wait. We needed to know right away."

Though she will be a first-time mom, the actress's White Collar costar Matt Bomer says Thiessen's maternal instincts are already in full gear on set. "She's totally the den mother of the show," says Bomer. "She keeps us guys all in check and she makes sure that we are gentlemen. She's so organized and so loving and generous – that can only make her an absolutely amazing mom."

Meanwhile, Thiessen's White Collar husband Tim DeKay, a father of two, has already given the expectant mom some parenting wisdom of his own. "I told her that being a parent is like the Peace Corps. It's the toughest job that you will ever love," says Dekay.

As for experiencing her changing body, Thiessen is taking advantages of her new curves. "The best part is not having to suck in your stomach anymore when wearing a tight dress. I love it!"

A three-year study by the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research of 1,145 pregnant women from an ethnically diverse population found that women who gained more weight than is recommended by the Institute of Medicine had a 50 percent increased risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The association between pregnancy weight gain and gestational diabetes was more pronounced among overweight and non-white women. The study included 345 pregnant women with gestational diabetes and 800 pregnant women without gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is defined as glucose intolerance that typically occurs during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. It causes complications in as many as seven percent of pregnancies in the United States. It can lead to early delivery, C-sections and type 2 diabetes, and can increase the child's risk of developing diabetes and obesity later in life.

After adjusting for age at delivery, race/ethnicity, previous births, and pre-pregnancy body mass index, the risk of gestational diabetes increased with increasing rates of pregnancy weight gain. Women who exceeded the IOM guidelines for weight gain had a 50 percent increase in the risk of gestational diabetes compared to women who gained within or below the IOM recommendations.

The researchers hypothesized that rapid weight gain early in pregnancy may result in an early increase in insulin resistance that leads to the "exhaustion" of the beta-cells in the pancreas that make and release insulin, which controls the level of glucose in the blood. This could reduce beta-cells' capacity to secrete adequate levels of insulin to compensate for the insulin resistance induced by the progression of pregnancy and therefore lead to the development of gestational diabetes.

Lead author Monique Hedderson, Ph.D., at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, was quoted as saying, "Health care providers should talk to their patients early in their pregnancy about the appropriate gestational weight gain, especially during the first trimester, and help women monitor their weight gain. Our research shows that weight gain in early pregnancy is a modifiable risk factor for gestational diabetes. Randomized studies are needed to determine the feasibility of this early intervention and the best methods to help women meet the IOM recommendations."

Women who gain excessive weight during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, may increase their risk of developing diabetes later in their pregnancy, according to a study by the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research that appears online in the current issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The three-year study of 1,145 pregnant women from an ethnically diverse population found that women who gained more weight than is recommended by the Institute of Medicine had a 50 percent increased risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus, also known as GDM. The association between pregnancy weight gain and gestational diabetes risk was more pronounced among overweight and non-white women. The study included 345 pregnant women with gestational diabetes and 800 pregnant women without gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is defined as glucose intolerance that typically occurs during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. It causes complications in as much as seven percent of pregnancies in the United States. It can lead to early delivery, C-sections and type 2 diabetes, and can increase the child's risk of developing diabetes and obesity later in life.

This study is among the first to support a direct link between pregnancy weight gain and gestational diabetes risk. Previous research has shown that weight gain before pregnancy and being overweight or obese at the start of pregnancy are risk factors for gestational diabetes. This study was funded by the American Diabetes Association and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

The study followed women members of Kaiser Permanente Northern California region and examined their overall rate of pregnancy weight gain up to the time of screening for gestational diabetes (typically between 24-28 gestational weeks), as well as the trimester-specific rates of weight gain compared to the Institute of Medicine's 2009 guidelines for recommended pregnancy weight gain. Based on a woman's pre-pregnancy body mass index, the IOM developed the 2009 guidelines for obstetricians to counsel pregnant women on suggested weight gain during pregnancy.

"Health care providers should talk to their patients early in their pregnancy about the appropriate gestational weight gain, especially during the first trimester, and help women monitor their weight gain. Our research shows that weight gain in early pregnancy is a modifiable risk factor for gestational diabetes," said the study's lead author Monique Hedderson, PhD, a scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research. "Randomized studies are needed to determine the feasibility of this early intervention and the best methods to help women meet the IOM recommendations."

Though the exact mechanism for how excessive weight gain may contribute to gestational diabetes is not known, researchers hypothesize that rapid weight gain early in pregnancy may result in an early increase in insulin resistance that leads to the "exhaustion" of the beta-cells in the pancreas that make and release insulin, which controls the level of glucose in the blood. This could reduce beta-cells' capacity to secrete adequate levels of insulin to compensate for the insulin resistance induced by the progression of pregnancy and therefore lead to the development of gestational diabetes, researchers said.

A strength of the study is its representative and ethnically diverse population. However, some limitations should be considered. Pre-pregnancy weights were self-reported for most women. However, researchers have no reason to believe that the women who developed gestational diabetes would have misreported their pre-pregnancy weight more than control women and results were similar when looking at the sub-group of women who had a measured pre-pregnancy weight.

This study is part of ongoing research at Kaiser Permanente to understand, prevent and treat gestational diabetes. A recent published Kaiser Permanente study of 16,000 women in Hawaii found that more than 10 percent of women of Chinese and Korean heritage may be at risk for developing gestational diabetes. Another published Kaiser Permanente study of 10,000 mother-child pairs showed that treating gestational diabetes during pregnancy can break the link between gestational diabetes and childhood obesity. That study showed, for the first time, that by treating women with gestational diabetes, the child's risk of becoming obese years later is significantly reduced.

The study follows other research at Kaiser Permanente regarding healthy weight gain during pregnancy. A recent published Kaiser Permanente study found that obese women who gain more than the recommended amount during pregnancy are much more likely to retain a portion of that weight one year after they give birth. Another published Kaiser Permanente study of 40,000 mother and baby pairs found that women who gained more than 40 pounds during their pregnancies were nearly twice as likely to have a heavy baby.

Women have long been told that gaining weight before becoming pregnant or being overweight at the start of pregnancy puts them at higher risk for gestational diabetes. But a new study finds that the first trimester is the most crucial time for weight gain that can increase the danger of developing the condition.

The study, released Monday in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, looked at data from an ethnically diverse group of women who had babies between 1996 and 1998; 345 women had gestational diabetes, and 800 who had not developed the disease served as a control group. Gestational diabetes is diabetes that starts during pregnancy; it can disappear after giving birth but has the potential to affect mother and child for years.

"When we looked at weight gain by trimester, we found that association [with gestational diabetes] was mainly due to excess weight gain during the first trimester," said Monique Hedderson, the study's lead author and a scientist at the Kaiser Permanente division of research in Oakland.

During that time, women who gained more weight than is recommended by the Institute of Medicine, or IOM, had a 50% greater risk of developing gestational diabetes than women who were within or below the IOM recommendations during that period.

The women in the highest category of weight gain -- those who gained between 0.6 pounds and 4 pounds per week in the first trimester -- had an 80% increased risk over women who were within or below the IOM recommendations.

The link between weight gain during the first trimester and gestational diabetes was stronger among women who were overweight at the start of their pregnancies. Obese women (those with a body mass index of 30 or more) in general gained the least weight in that time, yet that group was more at risk for developing gestational diabetes. There was no link between weight gain during the second trimester and gestational diabetes.

Hedderson and the study's other authors think that the early pregnancy weight gain may increase insulin resistance and in turn exhaust the pancreas' beta cells. Beta cells create and release insulin, which controls blood glucose levels.

"As all pregnancies progress," Hedderson said, "an increase in insulin resistance occurs. Most women's beta cells are able to compensate by releasing more insulin, but if a woman has reduced beta cell capacity caused by weight gain, she may not be able to compensate for this normal occurrence."

Obese women, she added, could be at such a high danger for developing gestational diabetes that any excess weight gain may push them into the disease.

In 2009, the IOM issued pregnancy guidelines that included some new recommendations for weight gain. For underweight women they suggested gaining 28 to 40 pounds, for normal-weight women 25 to 35 pounds, for overweight women 15 to 25 pounds, and for obese women 11 to 20 pounds.

Previously, it was suggested that obese women gain 15 pounds on the low end, with no ceiling noted.

However, Hedderson said, many women overestimate the amount they're supposed to eat during pregnancy. "Women only need an extra 100 to 300 calories a day during pregnancy," she said.

Gestational diabetes has long- and short-term consequences, including an increased risk for early delivery and C-section, and greater possibility for obesity and Type 2 diabetes later in life for the babies.

"After women deliver, we try to get them back to their ideal pre-pregnancy weight, so if they get pregnant again they'll be in good shape," said Dr. Lauren Golden, assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. She did not participate in the research.

"The study offers important information and a more formal way to now look at that. . . . It makes sense to tell women to look at their diet before pregnancy."

The study also has a strong message for women who are obese and contemplating pregnancy, said Dr. Mark B. Landon, professor and interim chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus.

"If obese women were to modify their diet and thus lose weight prior to becoming pregnant, that would probably reduce the risk for gestational diabetes, even more so than a modest reduction in weight gain in the first trimester," he said.

New GAPPS Repository of data, tissue specimens will be resource for researchers worldwide

A new report issued Feb. 22 identifies the enormous global impact of preterm birth and stillbirth—and what can be done to decrease it. Globally, an estimated 13 million babies are born preterm each year. Newborn deaths now account for more than 42 percent of mortality in children under the age of five, a rise from 37 percent in the year 2000. Additionally, an estimated 3.2 million are stillborn each year, and many of these losses are linked to maternal deaths.

The Global Report on Preterm & Stillbirth, published with the BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth's latest supplement (http://www.biomedcentral.com/bmcpregnancychildbirth/), identifies known causes and 21 proven interventions that could now be widely used to improve these extremely distressing yet under-addressed outcomes. Additionally, it outlines the urgent need for increased focus and attention on research. This is crucial for understanding the magnitude, causes, and consequences of preterm birth and stillbirth, and for speeding up the development of diagnostics, treatment and prevention strategies.

The report, led by the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth (GAPPS), and supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Seattle Children's, is a collaborative effort undertaken by an interdisciplinary team of maternal, newborn and child health experts from around the globe.

"We can save more lives, but we urgently need more action and resources to better understand the causes of prematurity and stillbirth, and to guide development of cost-effective interventions," said Dr. Craig E. Rubens, executive director of GAPPS. "For the first time ever, experts from around the world have agreed to a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to solving these global tragedies."

"Tremendous progress has been made toward saving the lives of children under 5, except in the early neonatal period, the first week of life, when about 3 million newborns die each year, many with complications of prematurity," said Gary Darmstadt, director of the Family Health Division at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "Attention to this crucial stage of life will help make progress toward the Millennium Development Goals of reducing child mortality and improving safe motherhood, because maternal, newborn and child health is so intertwined, and a healthy start to life sets the stage for lifelong health."

Preterm Birth and Stillbirth Affect all Countries

Although the impact of preterm birth and stillbirth is most widely felt in low- and middle-income countries, preterm birth rates are also rising in high-income countries. Preterm birth is the number one cause of newborn deaths worldwide, and those who survive can experience serious short- and long-term health problems. One million stillbirths occur each year during childbirth that could be reduced with existing interventions.

In the United States, great disparities exist between racial and ethnic groups: the preterm birth rates in 2005 vary from 18.4% among African American women to 11.7% among non-Hispanic white women and 10% among Asian and Pacific Islander women. An even larger disparity exists between costs and research. In the United States, for example, preterm birth is the 7th leading U.S. health care expenditure ($26B), yet perinatal health research ranks 63rd in NIH funding.

"BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth is pleased to present this important report," said Melissa Norton, Editorial Director (Medicine) at BioMed Central. "To date there has not been enough attention given to preterm births and stillbirth, and this report will contribute considerably in reducing the 13 million preterm births and 3.2 million stillbirths worldwide."

"Preterm births and stillbirths are major health issues in rich and poor countries alike, a private loss to many families that should be on the public's priority list," said Dr. Joy Lawn of Save the Children's Saving Newborn Lives program and a co-author of the report. "With greater understanding of the causes of preterm birth and stillbirth, we can prevent many losses, and make every birth count."

New Repository of Tissue Samples will Contribute to Global Research

Researchers lack access to quality specimens linked with phenotypic data, which has been a major impediment to solving the complex problems of preterm and stillbirth. To better understand and reduce the numbers of preterm births and stillbirths worldwide, GAPPS is establishing the GAPPS Repository (http://www.gappsseattle.org/assets/pdf/2010-02-19_Repository_Fact_Sheet_gs.pdf), a unique large collection of prospective data and specimens from diverse populations of pregnant women and their newborns. This will serve as a critical resource for researchers to develop projects that strive to understand and prevent preterm birth and stillbirth.

GAPPS is partnering closely with hospitals, universities and research institutes in the United States and internationally to establish the repository. This resource, which has great potential for furthering advances in medical and public health research, will include a large pool of samples collected from a network of global sites in a systematic and scientifically standardized manner. This will enable the study of multiple factors at different points throughout pregnancy, necessary for predicting adverse outcomes and their relation to gestational age.

The GAPPS Repository will drive discovery science research on these important health issues and accelerate biomarkers that can lead to predicting, treating, and ultimately preventing preterm birth and stillbirth. The repository will also serve as a resource for studies aimed at understanding other poor birth outcomes and fetal origins of adult disease, both acute and chronic. The GAPPS data and samples will be available to researchers worldwide.

Global Action Agenda

The BMC report outlines the first-ever comprehensive review on preterm births and stillbirths. It also includes a Global Action Agenda that was developed by more than 200 stakeholders at the 2009 International Conference on Prematurity and Stillbirth. Global leaders outlined collaborative strategies to achieve four key goals:

* Increase awareness and understanding of the magnitude of the problem - Global health leaders typically are unaware of the magnitude of the health problems caused by preterm birth and stillbirth, and their relationships to maternal, child and adult health. Other global health leaders have been aware of the problem, but have not known what to do.

* Close the research gaps - The biology of pregnancy and childbirth is poorly understood, as are the causes of preterm birth and stillbirth. Additionally, it is difficult to calculate the magnitude of the problem as there are no global standards for data collection.

* Support the discovery, development and delivery of interventions - More research is needed to determine which interventions are most effective. Effective interventions that are already available in low-resource settings should be promoted for scale-up. Effective interventions that are only available in high-income countries should be adapted and evaluated for effectiveness in low-resource settings.

* Increase resources for research and implementation - Significant funding, commitment and a coordinated effort are needed to reduce preterm births and stillbirth.

"This call to action presents a unique opportunity to move the prematurity and stillbirth agenda forward," said Dr. Rubens. "GAPPS is forging a collaborative effort toward achieving common goals to prevent preterm birth and stillbirth. There is significant momentum and we look forward to raising visibility for these critical issues so that we can fuel investments, accelerate innovative research and interventions, and promote effective health policies that will improve maternal, newborn and child health worldwide."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Single teen mom Bristol Palin, the daughter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, will make her acting debut on a television show that centers around a teen pregnancy, the Disney-owned ABC Family channel said on Tuesday.

Bristol, 19, whose pregnancy caused a stir during her mother's 2008 campaign, will play herself on the popular drama series "The Secret Life of the American Teenager." The episode will shoot in Los Angeles and air in the U.S. summer when the series returns for its third season.

The eldest daughter of Sarah Palin's five children, Bristol gave birth to a son named Tripp in December, 2008, and split last year with the baby's father and her fiance, Levi Johnston.

Her pregnancy was an awkward moment for Sarah Palin, a staunch conservative who supported teaching abstinence in public schools as a form of sex education.

On the TV show, Bristol will play herself as a friend of the show's 16-year-old protagonist, Amy, who juggles motherhood and high school after a one night stand with a fellow student. Despite lukewarm reviews when it started in 2008, the drama is one of the most popular youth shows on U.S. television.

Since giving birth, Bristol Palin has become increasingly outspoken, urging young Americans to abstain from having sex to avoid becoming a teenage mother like herself.

"Having a baby is a huge responsibility and I think that teenagers should just wait to have sex," she told a panel in New York last year as the abstinence ambassador for The Candie's Foundation.

Last week Bristol responded to jokes on her mother's Facebook page about the animated TV show, "Family Guy" that appeared to mock her 22-month-old brother, Trig, who has Down syndrome.

Acupuncture Lowers Depression During Pregnancy - Redorbit.com

Acupuncture appears to be an effective way to reduce depression symptoms during pregnancy, according to a first-of-its-kind study from Stanford University School of Medicine researchers.

The study authors, led by Rachel Manber, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, said they hope the results will raise awareness of the problem of depression during pregnancy and provide patients and physicians an alternative to antidepressants. "This standardized acupuncture protocol could be a viable treatment option for depression during pregnancy," they wrote in a paper that will appear in the March issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Up to 14 percent of pregnant women may have major depressive disorder, a condition characterized by feelings of dread, gloom and hopelessness, and a loss of interest in normally pleasurable activities. Some women suffer from depression before becoming pregnant, stop taking their medication and then experience a relapse; in other women, pregnancy itself may cause depression.

Clinicians aren't exactly sure how pregnancy leads to the disorder, but an influx of hormones could be the culprit. Some women might also feel overwhelmed by the major changes in their life, which could trigger depression. "Pregnancy just by its nature can bring out some underlying psychiatric and emotional issues," said co-author Deirdre Lyell, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

Depression, if left untreated, can pose risks to both mother and baby. The mom-to-be could stop taking care of herself or her fetus, and might even engage in self-destructive behavior. Studies have also linked depression during pregnancy to poor birth outcomes and postpartum depression. "Treatment of depression during pregnancy is critically important so that a woman can maintain her sense of well-being and take good care of herself, her fetus and, someday, her child," said Lyell.

The use of antidepressants during pregnancy doubled between 1999 and 2003, according to a 2007 American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology study, but many women avoid taking medication because of safety concerns. In fact, Manber said, 94 percent of the depressed women involved in her study expressed reluctance to take antidepressants.

"Because there's this concern about medication among pregnant women and their physicians, it's important to find an alternative," said Manber.

For this study, the researchers recruited 150 women whose pregnancies were between 12 and 30 weeks gestation and who met the criteria for major depressive disorder. The women were randomized to receive one of three treatments: acupuncture specific for depression; control acupuncture, during which needles were inserted in points not known to help alleviate depressive symptoms; or massage. All of the women received eight weeks of therapy and were assessed for depression at the four- and eight-week marks by an interviewer who was unaware of the treatment each woman received.

The researchers found that women who received the depression-specific acupuncture experienced a bigger reduction in depression symptoms than the women in the other groups. The response rate — defined as having a 50 percent or greater reduction in symptoms — was 63 percent for the women receiving depression-specific acupuncture, compared with 44 percent for the women in the other two treatment groups combined.

The researchers weren't surprised by what they found — a pilot study yielded similar results, and other studies have shown acupuncture is an effective treatment for depression in the general public — but they were pleased with the results.

"I don't think that one-size-fits-all treatments are appropriate for everyone, but acupuncture should be considered as an option," said Lyell. "I hope that people will respect the rigorous methodology used in this blinded, randomized, controlled trial and accept the result: Traditional acupuncture was associated with a significant improvement in depression."

Both Manber and Lyell said they plan to continue their research on women's health during pregnancy and postpartum. Lyell recently presented work showing that practitioners under-identify and under-acknowledge depression during pregnancy, and she's now analyzing birth-outcome data to look for correlations between depression, treatment and obstetric outcomes.

This study was funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality. Other Stanford authors on the study include Rosa Schnyer, DAOM; Andrea Chambers, PhD; Maurice Druzin, MD; Erin Carlyle; Christine Celio; Jenna Gress; Mary Huang; Tasha Kalista and Robin Martin-Okada.

Padma Lakshmi has welcomed a baby girl, her rep tells UsMagazine.com.

The girl was born late Saturday in New York City, the rep adds.

Meet Hollywood's new moms!

A source tells Us the girl's name is Krishna.

The Top Chef star, 39, has not revealed the baby's father.

UsMagazine.com first broke news that Lakshmi was expecting last October. The pregnancy was considered "a medical miracle," her rep told Us, because Lakshmi has struggled with endometriosis, a painful uterine condition that can lead to infertility.

"I actually can't button my jeans anymore," Lakshmi joked to Us last fall when asked how her pregnancy was going. "Up until about a week ago, I could. There's just too much pressure, so I've had to put them away for now."

During her pregnancy, Lakshmi said she hadn't "really had any cravings. There was about a week-and-a- half when I was really craving a cinnamon donut. Then I had the cinnamon donut, and it was like, 'Eh.' I mean, it was OK, but that was it. And then it was over."

DEAR CAROLYN: My friend and his wife are expecting ... and separating. The cause of the separation seems to be (significant) "stress of pregnancy" issues that I think are temporary.

As a bystander, what kinds of things are OK to say/do in support of the marriage? What kinds of things are over the line? — Va.

Assuming you're that kind of friend, how about: "Maybe you should wait till your wife gives birth before you openly contemplate dating other women, you moron."

Absolutely, there are things you don't know, as you acknowledge. For one, she could be as big a moron as he is. It could just be his hurt feelings talking. And it could be over between them for reasons that have nothing to do with pregnancy stress, where the prospect of a child merely precipitated a meltdown that was coming all along.

Whatever the case may be, you do know your friend is a mess, and you know the baby's coming, mess be damned. And your friend is confiding in you. And, while the baby obviously has a timetable, absolutely nothing else does.

So the most productive — and compassionate — tack might just be to listen as he talks his way through this, and remind him at judicious intervals that his best move might be no move at all. He loses nothing by waiting to see what effect the baby has on his life before turning that life on end.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia Even after nearly 20 years of skating and traveling the world with his ice dance partner Isabelle Delobel, Olivier Schoenfelder was never expecting the phone call he received from her last winter.

The good news: Delobel was pregnant. The bad news: Delobel was pregnant and the Winter Olympics were in little more than a year.

"A huge surprise," said Schoenfelder, who is Delobel's partner only on the ice. "At first I didn't quite grasp the amplitude of what it all meant.

"I congratulated her, of course, but it's true that afterward, it was a shock and quite difficult for me for a while."

Motherhood and elite sport are an increasingly common juggling act, with dozens of prominent athletes, including the Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters and the British marathoner Paula Radcliffe, resuming their successful careers after giving birth.

There are working mothers at these Olympics, too, including the American Alpine skier Sarah Schleper and the ice hockey player Jenny Potter.

But Delobel's maternity tale is more complex because she is part of a pair, which is not, in this case, a reference to her husband, Ludovic Roux.

The petite, dark-haired Delobel and the tall, blond Schoenfelder, both from France, were world champions in 2008 and were looking like favorites for the gold medal in Vancouver after climbing the ranks for many years, an ice dance prerequisite, and finishing fourth in the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy.

But a shoulder injury that Delobel sustained in December 2008 during an exhibition interrupted their season, and it was during her injury layoff that she became pregnant.

"I was still convinced we'd make it to the Olympics," said Delobel, 31, in an interview after the compulsory dance Friday night in Vancouver.

The reaction from their rivals is a blend of admiration for Delobel's ability to return so quickly and of sympathy for Schoenfelder.

"I think if that had been me, Fabian would have reacted very badly," said the French ice dancer Nathalie Pechalat, standing next to her partner Fabian Bourzat on Friday. "When you skate 20 years with someone with the dream of an Olympic medal, it's a big thing. I think you really have to maximize your chances, and obviously, the preparation year before the Games is very important."

Bourzat nodded his head. "We've now done a partnership contract between us to make sure that everything's clear between us," he joked.

But Schoenfelder, 32, has been according to his peers quite supportive, even if Delobel was concerned enough that she initially tried to reduce the impact by telling Schoenfelder and their coach, Muriel Boucher-Zazoui, that she was due in early September instead of several weeks later.

"She was afraid of our reaction," Boucher-Zazoui told the French newspaper L'Equipe.

During Delobel's maternity leave, Schoenfelder continued to train and skate on his own, which is of limited value in ice dancing, in which world-class routines are learned and honed together.

"When we learned the news about Isabelle's pregnancy, I definitely had my doubts about the Olympics," he said. "We asked ourselves and the doctors if it was really possible. It took some time to think, but after we made the decision to go for it, we didn't let ourselves doubt. We worked and always tried to make it happen. I think that's how we succeeded."

Though Delobel continued to train and skate deep into her pregnancy, even suffering the occasional fall in practice, she left the ice in late July, giving birth on Oct. 1 to a son, Loïs, and then returning to practice in late October at their longtime training base in Lyon, France. She began three-a-day sessions and intense physical training in November.

"You better believe it was tough," said Delobel, who had gained close to 20 pounds during pregnancy. "It was really a physical challenge, but I'm proud to have managed it."

A four-month timetable for returning to elite competition after childbirth is far more compressed than usual but not without precedent. Laura Flessel, a French fencing star, won a silver at the world championship four months after giving birth. The tennis player Lindsay Davenport returned to the tour just under three months after giving birth to her first child. But there has been no one quite like Delobel in figure skating, the closest perhaps being the Canadian pairs skater Kristy Sargeant, who returned to competition within a year.

"In the Canadian military, there have been some studies done, and it is three to four months to reach prepregnancy physical levels with an uncomplicated pregnancy in a fit person," said Julia Alleyne, the chief medical adviser for Skate Canada, who has written extensively on exercise and pregnancy. "Certainly anything under 12 weeks just doesn't work."

It helps that ice dancers, unlike singles and pairs skaters, do not perform jumps. But it is certainly an athletic endeavor. Alleyne said joint stability was affected by hormones that increased with pregnancy and breast-feeding. Delobel maintained fitness throughout her pregnancy and had a complication-free delivery, but she continued to breast-feed until December, longer than some of her sports advisers recommended.

But after skipping the European championships last month to continue practicing in Lyon, Delobel and Schoenfelder are back on the ice in Vancouver for their first competition in 14 months.

"We are putting everything into the Olympics; we didn't want to reveal our programs beforehand," Delobel said.

Loïs is home in France with Delobel's husband, a former Olympic bronze medalist for France in Nordic combined who is in the midst of a six-month paternity leave to allow his wife to focus on skating.

Delobel and Schoenfelder hope to benefit from the novelty factor with the judges, who have not spent a season analyzing their programs. They were sixth in the compulsories, but early reviews of their two main programs have been positive. They will perform a risqué version of the French can-can in the original dance and have based their evocative free program on the song "La Quete" interpreted by the classic Belgian singer Jacques Brel.

The title means "Quest" in English, and it is an appropriate term considering what Delobel and her partner have been through before and after that unexpected telephone call.

"We realize there's a symbolic aspect to this, but we didn't do it for girl power or to be some sort of model for people," Schoenfelder said. "We did it because we want a medal at the Olympics."

Fear of Pregnancy! Help! - Net Doctor

Hello I am having a big scare. I am afraid that I might be pregnant. My boyfriend and I have not had intercourse (we're both still virgins by defenition) but we both do oral and hand jobs for each other. I know because of that, the chances of pregnancy sound very unlikely, but I can't figure any other explanation. At first, I thought it could be stress, but even for stress, it's been too long. (it has been over 6 weeks since my last period and I normally have my period every 28 to 30 days) I'm healthy, not on any birth control, a healthy weight, and no women on either side of my family has had the disease Polysistic Ovarian Syndrome, (but I have a friend who does have it, that's why I know about it) or well no sexual diseases run in my family for that matter. Oh and on another note, every time my boyfriend would uh...put his fingers inside me, we'd make sure that his hands did not have any semen on them. And one last note, other than frequent urination, I have not shown any other pregnancy symptoms. On the first week of my March (my spring break) I plan on getting a pregnancy test. My boyfriend and I are freshman in college, so the last thing we need is something we're not ready for. Please help me!

It is unlikely your pregnant, however a test would tell you. I think if this is worrying you so much you should see your GP as they are ultimately the only ones who can find out whats going on.

Also, i feel i must add that sexual diseases dont run in familys as you said...you catch them from sexual partners and not always just through full intercourse but oral and by hand too. Just needed to mention that in case you werent aware.

I wish you all the best sweetie and hope you get to the bottom of it.

And I know that STDs are sexually transmitted, but I was talking about genetic ones like this one where cysts build up in the ovaries causing frequently delayed periods, unfertility, etc. And as I said, my boyfriend and I are both virgins, so I don't see how he could have given me a STD. (I know he's not lying about his virginity)

SCV Pregnancy Center - Santa Clarita Radio

The SCV Pregnancy Center offers education, pregnancy tests and counseling for women who become pregnant, and programs are in existence for parents and fathers to be.

In the 21 year history the Center has provided services to over 9,000 people.

While most of the Center's services are geared towards new families, they do offer grief counseling for women who decide to terminate their pregnancy.

"Women who have a miscarriage can openly grieve the loss of their pregnancy. Women who terminate their pregnancy have a difficult time recognizing that they have suffered a loss," said Angela Benner, who heads up the SCV Pregnancy Center.

Bennett went on to say that often woman do feel grief and sometimes they try to suppress it by using drugs or alcohol.

Yesterday rumors began circulating suggesting that the rapper Jay-Z could infact be the father of porn star Jazmine Cashmere unborn child, Jazmine Cashmere has now cleared up a few thing regarding the pregnancy on her Twitter page.

There have been a few things cleared up with recent tweets, we know that Jazmine is 6 and a half months pregnant, the tweet which confirmed this read "Yes I am pregnant, 6 and half months in fact.. And I am pregnant by WHO GIVES A F**K!! lol But the baby is great and very healthy thank you.".

Another tweet confirmed that Jay-Z is not the father, nor is any other rapper from New York, this tweet read "NO I AM NOT PREGNANT BY JAY Z OR ANY OTHER RAPPER FROM NEW YORK.."

Finally we can confirm that Jazmine will be having a baby boy, we know this as in one of her tweets in January she said that she was "counting down the days for my new little man to bless my world".

We are still not sure who the father is, however I am now following her on Twitter, as we hear more we will keep you posted.
